Attaching number to frame?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Attaching number to frame?

For those of you that either race, or do organized charity rides etc, what's the best way to attach the number to your bike frame? Zip ties, those wire ties they use for garbage bags, string? I'm wondering if it's tightly attached wouldn't it scratch the paint over time?

Amateur racing in the US, the number almost always goes on the rider not the bike.

In centuries, and such the numbers usually just go over the toptube and the 2 sides stick together with adhesive. At any rate the promoters will give you what you need, and you don't need the number anyway given it's not a race.

If you actually need to mount a plastic number to the bike, a bracket screwed through the brake bolt is the answer. You can make one out of a beer can.

If the number is a frame number that looks like a small "tent card" I use 3M77 spray adhesive and stick the card together. Use 2 zipp ties to attached the card to the lowest part of the seat post. The number trails behind the post and above the rear brake cal. out of the wind.

I just leave them off. I don't stick sticker on my helmet either.

I'll pin a number on my jersey, that's all.

They're usually just so the photographer can identify you more easily to sell you photos online.

I had to attack a number once. This is what I came up with...
