Where would your "dream" cycling places to live be?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd go back to Santa Cruz, it's better riding than Boulder. Better weather, more variety of great rides that you don't have to drive to, and it's a lot hillier.

There are a lot of other places that I'd want to go to ride on tour or vacation, but that wasn't the question.

Boston is pretty good: Spring, Summer and Fall temps that are mostly in the 70s and 80s...Winter temps do drop into the 50s on occasion, but, that's January for you...it snows only when you want some, and wind is nearly nonexistent, unless, of course, you want some for a tailwind...miles and miles of flats with mountains and rollers very close by...not to mention car drivers who are extremely polite and yielding.

I have never been to Europe, but there are some fantastic places from what I am told. Realistically? About 1-200 miles east of where I am at. Plans to move back to the other side of the Rockies are already in the works. Not like cycling is bad here and of course MTB is said to be as good here as Moab. I am going to miss 18 road.

Florida has Mt. Dora And yes, there is hardly any wind inland in FL unless of course you ride during hurricanes. Actually there are several places in central FL that have lots of big hills. Mountains, not so much.

East Tennessee is pretty good place. You have the valley between the Cumberland Plateau and the Smokies. The temps are pretty nice year round with the occasional snow in the winter.

I've ridden out there as well, and while I might choose to base myself in Gordes, the idea is the same. Oh, how I miss it...

Let's see...somewhere perfectly flat, but with strong winds...cold in the winter, hot in the summer, with miles and miles and miles of dead cotton plants to look at...that would be Lubbock, TX.

(Actually, I lived there and enjoyed it, but wasn't cycling, either.)

I live in Amarillo dude. I can feel you. Only without the dead cotton plant. It's like living under a giant blow dryer in the summer
The huge wind turbines outside of town are very relevant.

I'll second that, Germany is great, although I did not ride in the states I am almost positive I will be missing the cycling tolerance of Europe when I get back to the US. I saw about 50 single riders yesterday on a 40 mile ride, I do not think I have ever saw that many riders in an entire summer in the US. The tolerance is awesome and I am still getting used to it and am becoming more tolerant myself as I ride now. They will wait at intersections up to 30 seconds so you do not have to yield or stop. And I had a guy follow me for a km or 2 yesterday as the road was all curvy and blind spots, but he had no problem just cruising behind me. Granted I was peddling my ass off, but I was about to pull over to let him by just because of the courtesy he was giving me. The ground does not freeze here enough to get frost heeves or cracked pavement so yeah the nice roads are awesome.

It has being said before and I’ll say it again “San Diego” unless you have being here you have no idea what a good place to ride this is.

1. First of all you can ride year round, yes year round!
2. For all of those flat pushers you can do a 100 mile almost all flat ride on the coast.
3. If you are climber, but I mean a true climber, you can do 50 mile rides with 8000 ft of climbing or more, I like doing rides with 11000 ft plus of climbing my self. And as everything that climbs must descend, you have some awesome down hills for those Il Falco types.
4. You don’t have to ride the same route twice in a month

Ok if I keep going with the huge list I wont get out and ride. See you…

I dream of riding along the vineyard roads of Italy or France and going in every so often for a taste along the way; that just seems like a beautiful and peaceful ride.

Edit: I'll be in Venice in a few month, is there anyplace to rent and ride a bike in that area? I also wouldn't mind picking a nice Italian frame and having it shipped back while I'm there.

Somewhere hilly in Italy would be good. I can't really complain about my current location though.
