How many bikes do you own and why?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

One because even though I love cycling I loathe conspicuous consumption.

2. 1 road and one mountain. I like to mix things up a bit, and you can't ride through a forest very well on a road bike.

And my training/racing bike.

Are you trying to shame those with lots of bikes for conspicuous consumption... or are you digging for justifications for buying a new one ?

steel road bike was my original bike that got me excited about cycling. just got a new carbon now my main bike for regular fun rides and the steel will be for shorter fun rides. 1 mtb for popping down to the shop to pick up milk and bread. 1 mtb just to decorate the garden.

Five (actually sold one a month ago, so it used to be six) --

Road bike;
Rain bike (full fenders & disc brakes, still with drop bars);
FS MTB;
Older hardtail MTB, leftover from college; I guess it's my beater now;
Commuter/shopping/city bike, with a rack, slide-on basket, and dynohub & lights.

The sixth was a Cannondale Bad Boy that was a size too big. It was my first "nice" bike that I had gotten in about 8 years, but as I figured out what kind of bike I wanted to ride all the time, it became redundant. I could easily cut down to four bikes, maybe three, and that'd be it.

The reason I have multiple road bikes is I don't want to get rid of them. I have a mountain bike for off road and winter riding and a fixed gear for fun and variety.

Without an ounce of consumerist guilt, I presently own:

5 bikes presently rideable:
  1. A Marinoni Ciclo (winter/inclement weather road bike)
  2. A Marinoni Sportivo Ti (fast road/randonnee event bike)
  3. Rivendell Bleriot (day tourer)
  4. Rocky Mountain Blizzard (snow bike and occasional offroad)
  5. Nishiki Landau (32 y/o friend and on-trainer bike)

I also have a classic Reynold's 531 road bike awaiting restoration or 650b conversion.
Next, I plan to get a new expedition touring bike.

One bike doesn't do everything I presently like doing ideally. If I had to choose one "all-rounder," it would be something akin to the Bleriot.

My bikes.

7 is the perfect number

1 commuter
1 modern road
1 20s road
1 30s road
1 50s road
1 track
1 optional

I have 3 of the 7. I'm still somewhat young.
