How do you feel when you get dropped?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just have one of my water carriers

I just have one of the water carriers pull me back to the lead group.
Or I use the old water bottle trick.

Actually I am a pretty nice guy.

However, that doesn't make the question posed any smarter. The Road Cycling Forum is often mistaken as a Road Racing forum. Although there are plenty of wannabe racers (and even some real racers) who post here, most are simply riding their road bikes.

Let me answer the question about being dropped. My feelings do not change at all when someone leaves me behind.

If you want to ruin the pleasure of a great bike ride, react with shame, anger, guilt or envy whenever anybody passes you.

When riding with a group of people 20-40 years younger than I am, I can hang on the back until the first big hill, then when they are at the top I still have a long way to go. It is trying to catch the group again so I can draft and catch my breath that is the trick. If I can, I'll do O.K. until the next big hill when I get dropped again and the chance of catching up diminishes. How do I feel? Well, it made me train hard all winter and into spring, but I didn't do the hill repeats I needed to make myself a better climber because I worry about falling and breaking a hip and not being able to ride this season. One day in the future I will be able not only to hang but to contribute- that is a day I look forward to seeing, but then sadly I would want to find a faster group.

And of course getting dropped is not the same as getting passed. You can't be dropped by someone you weren't riding with in the first place.

I got dropped last Saturday, along with a small group of about ten. I felt annoyed.

Depends on my goal for the ride. If I have a race on the weekend, I'm not going to go anerobic on a group ride, so I'll let 'em burn matches all day and stick to my plan. If its a tempo day, it's usually more structured than hammer till we shed the weak. Intervals, hills repeat, paceline practice, or what have you is the way I'll ride hard. There's just only so many hours in the week for functional training, and spending them in on hammerheads (who I never see at the races) isn't for me.

Me, I feel happy that it makes the faster guy happy at any given moment. Life is going to be miserable enough for him if he carries that attitude over into other aspects of it.

That's how I feel. When getting droped becomes imminent i.e. when I start to spit up internal organs from over exertion, I perform a Vulcan mind meld with the guy dropeing me and I assume his consciousness and then feel better.
