Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm just the opposite... NC was too cold for me. Once I ended up in Miami on a 1-year consulting job, I sold my house in Charlotte and stayed. I *hate* the cold. Hate hate hate it. I hate snow. I hate ice. Did I mention that I hate the cold? Anything < 50F is too cold.

If you live for snow your in the right place and if I don't like it, so am I. But if you like riding outdoors for 12 months/year instead of a trainer for 2-3 months, FL has you beat. I could care less about skiing. Did plenty of it while living in the Poconos. To each his own.

Weather: Great - How can you beat a week of 70-80F days of sunshine coming from central Indiana?

Wind: No Factor - All I've ever heard about cycling in Florida was how windy it was and how it would destroy your soul. I'm not sure it ever got over 10mph the whole time I was there. When I got back home my first ride was in 30mph gusting to 45.

Terrain: Boring - Miles and miles of flat can begin to get a little old.

Scenery: Excellent - Looking out over the bays and gulf was great!

Bike Lanes: Good and Bad - They were everywhere I rode (Siesta and Longboat Key), they were generally in good shape although often blocked by cars, overhanging trees, debris etc. Back home there is no such thing as a bike lane so it was nice to have a designated place to ride. However I think they can cause a false sense of security, a couple of time I found myself doing things I would never do at home because I was in a lane.. ie passing cars on the right, inviting a right hook.

Traffic: Not Bad - I rode 130 or so miles with no real close calls.

Cycling culture: Great! - People were on bicycles everywhere. I passed more people on bikes in that one week than I will see all year here. I caught up with a group ride out of Sarasota and they invited me along for the next ride, the bike shop people were great and helpful (especially Village Bikes in Sarasota).

My overall impression of Florida Gulf coast riding was great.. I'll certainly take my bike with me next year.

Good to hear you enjoyed your visit and the cycling. And we don't really hate you - we just want your money, then want you to leave. Nice report - any pics?

As far as the cycling culture, you nailed it. On today's group ride we passed at least 150 cyclists on our 40 mile ride. Some rec, but mostly serious (full kit) riders.

Re: Fl wind. The wind here on the Atlantic coast has been depressing these last 2 months. It seems to be a consistent 15-20 with gusts of 25+. Snce I live a stone's throw from the intracoastal I've been getting winds in the stronger part of the forecast. It's getting old, to say the least.

Having said that I am not one of those who try to equate wind with climbing. I don't climb an awful lot but it is much harder than pushing into a headwind. The wind begins to be a bit of a psychological burden as it just goes on with no promise of a 45mph+ downhill afterwards. But physiologically, I have no doubt that I'd have a much harder day in Colorado on a dead still day than I do here on the windiest.

(Well, at the windiest I'm willing to ride. When the hurricanes come I stay inside)

Also, speaking as a native the winds seem to be abnormal of late. With near 45 years of perspective I can say our weather pattern is out of whack. Alot drier and windier the last few Springs and early summers. Whether this proves Al Gore right or not; I have no idea but I wish we'd get back to "normal."

There are parts of FL that do have a nice "roll" to them. They've been mentioned before: San Antonio, Zephyrhills, Clermont, really all of Pasco County NE of Tampa but they're not mountains by any means. The parts of FL that people think of when they (non-Floridians) think of FL are very flat indeed. Riding along the beach is very nice though and, as pointed out, there are very active cycling scenes throughout the state. We just use the big ring 8o% of the time or so.

Finally, how in the world anyone proud of being a UGA "Dawg" thinks he can credibly talk smack about anything is way beyond me. Maybe you'll beat the Gators again. You're due in about 5 years.

#1 That's good to know.. you certainly got it!

#2 Sure, but you probably wouldn't be interested in seeing my kids on the beach! I haven't ever carried a camera with me when I ride, I'm usually going to hard to 'stop and smell the roses'. There were some beautiful moments on my ride yesterday that I wished I had a camera for.. maybe I'll start.

Grew up in SE PA and rode 74" fixt in Vermont so hills are no big deal.
I will take any hill in VT over some of the wind that blows up A1A
People think that 'cuz FL's flat its an easy ride. Add 98 degree, brutal
sunscorch, 40mph winds and drivers who in some parts might be getting
paid a bounty to flatten you, and it isnt as easy as it might seem.

Im not a FL fan by any stretch, but there are some nice areas northerly.
Mt. Dora / Eustis area is as nice as anywhere on the East Coast.

Err incorrect....we ride 12 months a year out here on the flats just like you...the only thing we don't do in the winter is climb. You didn't ski in the Pocono's...you slid around on ice

Most of the time there are hardly any people on it, so it's not like the MUPS in big cities. I took a 13 mile ride this afternoon and saw one other biker, even though it was sunny and in the high 80's.

I do see a lot of people riding bikes for transportation, many riding xmart bikes on the wrong side of the road with no helmet. We have a large population of low income people in rural Florida, in many cases bikes are their only transportation.

And for those of you who think Florida sucks, I'll remember that at tax time when I am NOT paying state income taxes. How many of you pay $300 a year for property taxes on a 3bdrm home? Its not all great here, but I have now lived in 6 different states from the Upper Midwest, to New England and the Mid-Atlantic and I have moved back to Florida twice![/QUOTE]

You also live a rural county, I live in Polk which is not metropolitan by any means and I pay 4,300.00 for a 3 bed 2.5 bath with a pool. So our taxes are not that cheap the advantage is no state income tax...
might i add, let's talk about property insurance cost for most of the coastal areas of florida. last house i owned the insurance was approximately $4000 for homeowners, wind and flood. up north comparible home like $1000/year.

Insurance can be a burden. Mine was pushing $5K/year. The escrow payment was higher than my principal payment for the monthly mortgage.

Then State Farm dropped me (and everybody else in the state) and I went into the state underwritten program and I saved $3K. I sure ain't complaining but......... go figure.

So State Farm was charging 2X+ what the state run company is charging and they felt thery had to pull out of the state. Either they or the state of FL are makng a big mistake. I hope it's State Farm.

OK, talking about cycling in "Florida" is useless for the most part as every area is different.

As someone else pointed out, St. Pete is a great place to ride. St. Pete has a large cycling community, lots of cycling lanes and courteous (for the most part) drivers. The fact that there are so many cyclists on the road around here has more or less trained them.

Granted, with no hills, our rides are mostly sprintfests, but they're fun and challenging.

If you want to ride hills, Cleremont (while not mountainous, it does have some good hills) is just an hour away.

With great weather, the ability to ride to the beach and the other benefits, the St. Pete area has to be one of the best places to ride in the state, if not the country. If you plan on coming to the area, let me know and we'll go for a spin together.

Our homeowners insurance is around $1000, so we are pretty lucky. In Maryland we paid a few hundred for a house with twice the value. It pays to have an older house sometimes, which is also why our taxes are so low. Due to the constitutional amendment limiting property taxes, people with new homes pay really high amounts of taxes, while those of us in older homes pay very little. No, I don't feel guilty! Compared to my brothers costs back home in New Jersey, this area is a bargain.

If you are self employed, you can buy brand new houses here for $125,000. No jobs though, our unemployment is in double digits here in Citrus County.

Here's a quote from the bicyclesafe.com website:

"Bruce Mackey (formerly of Florida, now head of bike safety in Nevada) says that 60% of bike collisions in Florida are caused by cyclists riding at night without lights."

ederly population, ****ty roads, over crowding, influx of northern transplants. it makes sense. I got smacked head on last august by an old lady that retired to florida from NY..... god bless her and trying to beat me so she could get home .00005 seconds faster then if she had waited for me to pass the road she was turning onto.

Saturday. Rode out of the house did 50 miles on a combination of low trafficed roads and bike lanes. Road across sand dunes, through marshes, and past ocean and intracoastal views. With a temp in the 80's and no humidity.

Saturday afternoon, went to the Players Championship and watched the best professional golfers in the world (and a number of very attractive young ladies in skimpy sun dresses).

Came home, set on the lanai and looked out over the ocean while enjoying a beverage as the sun set.

Yes, Life in Florida sucks.

Johnny99 is either:

1) bumping his thread to keep making some unknown point.
2) happy to see another state steal the most dangerous biking state from CA.
3) oblivious to the fact that no one cares. That's why your thread was dying until you bumped it.

The month of May is promoted as National Bike month. These articles attempt to bring attention to the need to improve bike lanes, driver awareness, etc. This is an annual tradition for the safety advocates to get some free ink.

As stated in this story - Laura Hallam, executive director of the Florida Bicycle Association, said people ride bicycles all year in Florida, and that increases the fatality rate. It is estimated that about 1 million people cycle in Florida, although it is not clear how many ride regularly and how many only ride occasionally.

There are too many variables to draw this simple conclusion.

P.S. This article was published in last Sunday's newspaper. It refers to 2008 data, unlike the original post in this thread which refers to 2007 data. The article does have several interesting quotes from both local bicycling advocates and government officials.

the difference being in Florida you can actually afford oceanfront, and you pay no state income tax.

There's a reason people are relocating from Southern California to Jacksonville.

The real reason Florida sucks is the highest point is 345ft...

I have family in Florida, and truth be told I love the place. But drivers are pretty bad over there.
