PROBLEM with chain JUMPING OFF BIG RING

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

PROBLEM with chain JUMPING OFF BIG RING

The chain in front is on large ring, when I shift to lowest gear in back , it goes into it on the back but the chain wants to jump off the large chainring in front. It is riding on the top of the teeth halfway off, ready to drop ,not on the inner ring but down between the small chainring and large. I am thinking I need to move the high limit screw a smidgen out --is this the correct thinking or am I off base. Any suggestions would be appreciated .

Compact Shimano 50-35 , just rode it for first time today. Cassette set- up is 12-27

Your front derailer needs to be adjusted in (assuming everything else is properly adjusted).

https://bicycletutor.com/adjust-front-derailer/

High Gear Limit

To adjust the high-gear limit, shift the chain into your highest gear, that is, smallest sprocket in the rear, and the largest sprocket in the front. The high-gear limit prevents the chain from shifting past the largest chainwheel and throwing the chain out into your pedals. Ideally you want the cage to stop just after it clears the chain on the large chainring.

The front chain rings are 50-35, the back cassette is 12-27, the front crank is a new compact type.

what exactly happened-with chain

The chain doesnt jump past the big ring-towards the deraileur. When I shift to the largest sproket in the back(largest cog), when I do this the chain wants to jump off the big chain ring. It falls between the large ring and small ring, this happened on the road today.

To much cross chaining.
Switch to the Small Front ring before going to your largest cassette ring.

10 Wheels has it right. You should be able to find a similar gear in another ratio that doesn't have you so crossed up.

adjust the derailler and also add some tension to the cable. a little at a time. cable stretch is an ongoing thing. dramatic with new cables.

Cross chaining is bad technique. You should plan your shifts better. If you need to downshift from a 50 x 27, you'll need to simultaneously downshift to the small ring and upshift the rear at least two cogs. You should already be in the small ring. 50 x 27 is just about the same as a 34 x 18.

If the chain has stretched too much it might also cause some slop especially with the cross-chaining as mentioned above.
