A beautiful day out... North Kyoto

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A beautiful day out... North Kyoto

Yesterday our little group went out for a lovely ride into the mountains surrounding Kyoto's north. It was a 101km ride with several hills and 3 major mountains thrown in for good measure...

Nice, but those are pretty narrow roads! Is the one in the pictures one way only? (there are not dividing lines).

No none of the roads are one-way. We watch for cars in the road-side mirrors on the corners and usually the cars give us space and vice-versa.
They realized in Japan that it's often not a good idea to have dividing lines on skinny streets. The reason for this is that drivers assume ownership of "their" lane and tend to not to move over when there is a requirement to pass. Remove the lines, everyone shares the road. True.

I want to be there.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

I'm not sure if you've mentioned, but what brought you to Kyoto? Military? Job?

Hi there. Yep I live in Kyoto and have for about 4 years. I don't know the Sado Ride but my guess would be that I couldn't make it there to try. I have family here in Kyoto and pretty busy with work (Only Sundays off and some public holidays)
I'm glad you like the pics. Are you in Japan? If you're ever down here PM me and let me know.
Steve.

I moved to Kyoto from Australia for my daughter. My wife is Japanese and I thought it was important for my daughter to understand her Japanese culture and of course to improve her Nihongo skills. We are here for the long run so started building a house a month or so ago.

Thanks for the pics, brings back fond memories...I had a couple of teaching gigs in Kobe (during the 1990s and my wife and I traveled around, including a stay in Kyoto and other wonderful places such as Karuizawa)

This is not possible for me. Unfortunately my bike and I stand out like dogs balls and the Obachans (Old ladies) in my neighbourhood notice my every move, analyze it and report back. All part of the fun.
