i just can't do it. i've been nursing a slight back of knee pain for several weeks. i don't feel it normally, but if i mash hard uphill it gets aggravated. so i've been spinning lightly and not going too far.
i know it would probably disappear completely if i just put my feet up and drank some beer but i want to ride!

I am 61 and have pains all over especially for a few days after a long ride which are usually 50-60 miles. I also know if I spent a few weeks off the bike some of the nagging injuries would get better. However I have a personal steak of riding at lease once each week for about 185 consecutive weeks of a ride of at least 30 miles usually 50-60 miles. I live on Long Island in New York so the winter is tough. Like you I know resting would be beneficial.

Cycling doesn't hurt, but I feel that way about tennis. I guess it's the running and direction changes, but 3 sets can leave me feeling pretty beat up.
But I'm still riding and playing...

Get fitted or refitted, maybe move your saddle forward or down by a millimeter or two. Consider seeing a physical therapist for some exercises, probably lot of hamstring and posterior leg & hip muscle stretching, start using a foam roller or other means of working on trigger points in your hamstrings/calves/glutes.
Something's wrong, find out what it is, do something about it.

Funny that you posted that.
After several months of structured training (mostly on the trainer, as winter around here was brutal and long), I just had the crappiest, most stressful and busiest couple of weeks in a long while. I wasn't able to do much riding, and in the last 4 days no riding at all.
Today I rode without any plan, just a long ride to clear my mind. It was awesome!
The little break really does help to bring back the fun (and you feel so much stronger!).

I get cranky, but if I need to, I need to. Usually nothing more than a week.

normally at most i go a few days without riding.
after a 600k or some huge ride, i'll take a week or so off the bike. it's easy to take time off the bike after one of those rides.

I tried riding through injuries but that was 25 years ago. It didn't work out too well, I ended up missing a whole season. Never done it again.
