Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling and headphones

I enjoy listening to music while out riding. I only use one ear bud in my right ear so I can still hear any oncoming traffic. I honestly have no idea if this is even legal or not, anyone know???

Whether it's legal or not will be defined in your local (state/city) statutes.

Not sure legal or not, but I only do that when i am riding on the bike trail here. not on the streets where i have to share the road with 4-wheel vehicles.

im the opposite. i can ride with earbuds in and hear cars a good distance behind me coming up. but if im on a bike path or any ride for that matter with multiple cyclists i will not use earbuds as i cant hear them passing or saying something to me.

I often ride with one earbud in when riding alone. My team doesn't allow headphones on training rides.

Some people say this is a bad idea because you can't hear cars. But when I lived in Texas, if the wind was in my face, i couldn't hear any cars coming up behind me anyway. I never had a problem, so I still do it.

I wear earbuds turned down low on solo rides. Never on a group ride. If you wear ear warmers that hinders your hearing too. It is a proven fact that deaf people can ride so hearing is not that all important. I say enjoy your music. Don't rock out on full blast.

use in canal earphones.

blocks out about 25~30db from the outside and you don't have to crank it up so you destroy your hearing.

Illegal in most places but tolerated.

Always look behind before you make a move and you should be ok.

Not a fan of headphones on the bike, but whatever floats your boat. It doesn't (or at least shouldn't) affect anyone else, so do whatever makes you happy.

Also, this topic has been discussed in great detail (and with great emotion from both sides) on this board many, many times.

It's legal in California. Other than that, you have to look it up yourself.

Personally, I run with them but never ride. Although I'll say this - with winds here usually over 20 MPH out of the SSE, I can't hear **** for the most part anyhow on solo rides, so the only point of not having them in when riding is they'll get blown out somehow and then I'll have to stop repeatedly.

I ride with them every time I ride, even in groups. Only time I leave them home is if I'm meeting someone for a social ride and expect to be chatting. With the volume at a reasonable level, I don't have any more trouble hearing traffic than I do with wind noise alone.

I ride with headphones all the time. I always ride solo though too. Probably wouldn't ride with them in with other riders, or a club though.

The only reasonably serious crash I've had since I started riding last year was caused by a guy wearing earbuds who couldn't hear me advise "On your left". He made a move across my front wheel.

Maybe he heard you and thought you asked him to move left?

Wearing them in both ears is not the same as wearing them in one

And "on your left" is a bad idea anyway...
