Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Price: Mavic Open pros w/ ultegra hubs; handbuilt

I was searching the forums and found similar threads from 2006, but I wanted more current information.

Where is the best price to pick up a set of Mavic Open Pros laced to Ultegra hubs. I'm looking for handbuilt wheels.

Please provide recommendations along with quick reviews of the wheelset if you've experienced them..

(OR)

If anyone is selling a set, feel free to PM me.

Thanks!

These are probably not hand built but are certainly cheap:

You don't want the best price, you want a really good build. Whoever is building for Excel Sports right now is doing a good job.

I have two sets from Colorado Cyclist....both have/do required some trueing. But I admittedly abuse my wheels running them off road a lot.

BWW. Who cares if they are handbuilt or not. I have had plenty of machine built wheels with no problems. My BWW set is still as true as the day I got them and they have thousands of miles now.

I'm not so picky about hand-built or not. But, make sure they are evenly tensioned and stress relieved. Then, retension them after a few hundred miles or if they start to show any signs of going out of true. At that point, it matters little whether the spokes were orignally installed and spun down on a machine or by hand.

At anywhere from 113kg-125kg over the last decade, I've been running 36, 3 cross, 14ga straights for all that time with few issues. They're just a good, no non-sense, wheel.

+1 for Peter White

I ran for his low end MTB wheels for 4 years of racing and never needed to true them, I am 178 lbs.

They built me a mavic open sport on a schmidt dynamo hub for my commuter (salsa la cruz). I ride it on horrible roads, curb jump, offroad... I'm 185 lbs and hard on equipment and it's perfect after 600 miles. I expect to add a zero to that number before it needs much attention.

Also, if you're at all clyde-like, consider the CXP-33 rim over the Open Pro. The weight difference is negligible (too lazy to look it up), but the CXP-33 is noticeably stronger and stiffer.

I built my current training wheels on CXP-33 and Dura Ace hubs, 28/36. Couldn't be happier.

I'll have to guess at what I paid on ebay for the hubs, but something like:

DA 7700 rear hub = $85
DA 7800 front hub = $90
Rim (2) = $85/ea
Spokes (64) = $1.50/ea = $100

Total = $445

Since this was my first wheel build, we won't talk about what I spent on tools.

I have a set of cpx33 on ultegra hubs and a set of open pro's on ultegra hubs. the open pro's do seem to give a slightly more muted ride. but you can hardly tell the difference. oh, I weigh 240 lbs and they are holding up just fine. hand bult by me.
Nashbar has the rear hub for like $65.00 fronts are $40.00. I was able to find my rims locally for 50% off or 2 for the price of 1.A going out of buisness sale. and I am still close on price with the machine builts.
$239.00 is hard to beat.
