bicycle insurance?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

bicycle insurance?

for those of you with expensive bikes (thats relative, i know) are your machines specifically covered under your homeowners policy (or renters insurance, or something else) against theft?

obviously this would go for if your house got robbed and the bike got swiped, but what about theft of the bike while away from the home, covered?

i have a valuable personal property rider on my homeowners insurance, would that be the place for it?

i'm seriously contemplating buying a new ride in the fall, and was just thinking about this. anyone have any input on this??

The bike would be covered by your homeowner's insurance under most circumstances, subject to deductible and other standard limitations, and that would usually include theft while away from home.

You can also take out a rider - my insurance company calls it a "personal articles" policy - to cover just the bike. The big advantage of doing so is that you can reduce or eliminate your deductible, plus you usually declare a value for your bike right up front, so they're less likely to argue with you if you have to file a claim. Also, most riders offer "replacement value" rather than depreciated value. I haven't done this for my ride, yet, but a while ago I insured about $15k worth of photography equipment this way. If I remember right, full coverage was about $45 per year.

Do a seach. This has been discussed here quite a bit. The general consensus is homeowner insurance covers bikes easily. The important thing is having proof of purchase.

My old insurance covered sports equipment up to $1000 per item. I purchased extra coverage for the bikes affected for a few dollars a month for full replacement. Insurance just wanted a photocopy of all the receipts.

You don't need proof of purchase with USAA. My snowboard stuff was ripped off from the parking lot of Mary Jane and everything (minus deductible) was covered with minimal questions asked and no receipts. All I did was send them links to my stuff at online stores.
