how loud is your drivetrain?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

how loud is your drivetrain?

Just replaced my tiagra with ultegra SL. For one thing, I get chain rub when I'm even in the 3rd smallest gear in the small cog and the top two gears in the big cog.. is this normal? I've had the LBS take a look at it and they claim it's because the cables are new.

Is your drivetrain silent? btw even aside from that, i hear a rattling sound when I'm pedaling regularly. How much noise should it make?

Your deraileurs need fine-tuning. Take your bike into a shop and have them show you how to adjust it....preferably a different shop than the one that blamed your problem on new cables.

I thought I was experiencing chain rub on my newest bike, and kept fiddling with the cable adjusters, then one day realized it was the chain! I wouldn't have figured it out had I not got caught out in the rain. The noise stopped when the chain was wet. A subsequent cleaning and lubrication confirmed my "diagnosis." I was rewarded with sweet slience, except for the tires. Now when I hear the noise I know it's time to clean and lube the chain. The noise is worse with certain chainring/cog combinations, especially with the inner chainring. (I have a triple).

I have full 105 on one, full DA on the other. Both are silent when pedaling except at the cross chain point, and then it is only a slight rub.

I suggest you either learn to adjust it yourself, or find a new LBS.

My bike might be covered in road dirt, snot, spit, and such but my drive train is totally shiny and quiet.

My DA 7800 and Ultegra 6600 are both silent, no chain rub perfectly serviced by my LBS.

I can't help with your issue, but in regards to your question, the drivetrain on my newer bike is much quieter than the one on my older one.
