Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Want to switch to compact crank. Can I change just the crankset?

Quick question.

Current I have full SRAM Rival 09 53/39. I want to switch to a SRAM Red 50/34 compact crankset. Can my drive train stay intact and just change the crankset? Or would I need a new bottom bracket and front derailleur?

New bottom bracket probably, f/d should be fine.

You'll probably need to lower your FD a millimeter or two, but you won't need a new one.

Are you sure about that? I don't run SRAM but that sounds unlikely. Incidentally, you might consider changing your cassette before you drop a few hundred dollars on a new crank. If you're running an 11-23 or 12-23 you might just buy a cassette with a 26 tooth cog and enjoy a similar range of gears. That Force crank is, by most accounts, very nice--I wouldn't be too quick to junk it.

Both the Red and the Rival cranksets use the GXP bottom bracket cups. All you'll need are the crank arms and chainrings. Heck, you might just be able to change out the chainrings and leave the crank arms alone, since the Rival cranks are incredibly stiff.

The SRAM FD has a lower position on the mounting for the derailleur cage for use with a compact crank. They have video on their website on how to set it up. You might need to lose a link on your chain after the switch; check per the instructions on the website. You can use the same BB, though I think the Red BB has ceramic bearings. Probably not worth the extra $ to get one, though.

Compact means 110mm BCD chainrings. Those don't fit on a 130mm BCD crank.
