Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Given up MTN in Favor of Road -

Who has either given up their mountain bike riding or drastically reduced in favor of putting miles on their road bikes and why?

I have. Temporarily.

Trails to ride on are few and far between where I live in suburbia, and I have to drive to access them, so I left the MTB at school this year, and brought the road bike home. Good riding roads are much more plentiful.

I ride my fat-tired bike more often when out in State College.

I gave up MTB riding when I realized they weren't going to pave over the single track. It's too friggin bumpy in the woods. What's up with that?

I started on road, but soon discovered that I prefer the stability and durability of the MTB. This season I dusted off my roadie and took her in for the full tune-up. I rode her to work yesterday, and while she was faster on flats, I panicked every time I ran over even the smallest bump in the road. I'm back on my roadified MTB today. Rigid forks, street tires, bigger ringset up front, smaller cassette in back.

pcad, how's the Fly Ti? I've been away for a while.

Pft, rocks make a ride more interesting.

Pcad, you sound like the UVM mountain bikers that complained about the trails being too rocky at the mountain bike race we put on at Penn State.

Mountains are made out of rock, after all.

I found that I was riding less and less in the mountain since I don't live in the mountain. For an hour of riding I have to drive 15 to 20 minutes whereas with road I just pedal out of the garage. I enjoy mountain... but it takes more planning to gear up, load the bike's and go for a drive then ride.

I gave up MTB riding a year or so ago(after 20 years of mountain biking). My skill level got so high that I didn't enjoy riding anything but the scariest stuff, and the risk was getting to be too great. My local trails are so hairy that a tiny mistake can need a medevac.

I have. Because road bikes are fast, and mountain bikes are slow and lame.

I gave my MTB up because I wanted to ride my bike, not drive it somewhere to ride it.

I did this year. I had slicks on my Kona since I never rode off road anymore (no trails close). So I just decided I wanted a road bike. I sold it and bought a flat bar road bike that turned out to be much to small and it really bothered my back. Now I have a cheapo road bike, but I am enjoying it much better than riding the MTB on the road.

I gave up my MTB for a road bike and never even really think about riding the trails and I live minutes from some of the best mtn biking trails in the world. I like to suffer not get thrills from my riding. I'll get my thrills during ski season....summer is for suffering

One day when I realized my favorite mtn bike had semi-slicks on it, and neither of my two mtn bikes had been on a trail in ten years, it was time to build a road bike. Also, mtn handlebars suck for high-speed descents out of the mountains. (However I do miss the rock-solid stability of the mtn bike on a fast descent).

Personally, I always found the idea of doing just one of the two odd.

I started out a Mountain biker..

now i have a good mix, As the weather improves I tend to want to dive into the woods and shade, over the open road.. but most weekends I split it, Sat morning are my road days sunday mornings are my mtb days

however once it gets really warm, I start doing road rides every morning before work. so road is def taking the favoritism here

Well, I still have my 10 year old Raleigh mountain bike, but I love my new road bike. I keep the old bike because then I always have the option to have some fun - if not on mountains then jumping off kerbs and wheelies and stuff!
Road bike 1st choice though. Smooth speed...
