Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

fuji team or scattante cfr sport?

I just totaled my truck and my license is suspended. I need a commuter/performance trainer. I'm a fighter and love the idea of biking for cross training. I don't know much about bikes but I'm looking for something I can ride up to 400 a miles a week on and maybe start racing eventually. The max I can spend on the bike alone is 1200. I just put the scattante on layaway when it was on sale for 1200, now the fuji is on sale for 1200. The bike on layaway is a 53, I'm 5'10" with my shoes off and I hear a lot of guys my height and even shorter are riding 54, 55, 56. I need some advise.

What is your inseam, measured from crotch to floor? I'm gonna guess a 53 is too small and I would think a 55, 56 or 57. Wont the dorks at performance help you get the right size or are they pushing you into the 53?

Can't find my tape measure right now to check but my legs may be a little long for my height. At performance they think I should get the 53 but one of the guys is at least 2 inches shorter than me and he rides a 54. Which bike do thing gives me the most bang for the buck?

That's just my brain damage acting up. I meant, which bike do you think gives me the most bang for the buck? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Doubt there's much between those two bikes.

53 sounds too small, but bike sizes can be deceptive.

The top tube length is what matters, at 5'10" you probably want to be on a 55 or 56 effective TT length.

I hear Fuji bikes are great; I would try one and see.

For the same price the Fuji is a better deal, better components.

That's a huge amont of miles. At 20 miles an hour that would be 20 hours of ride time. Way too much unless you are trained up for it and on a serious training program.

I've got the Team RC. At 5'10" I'm very very comfortable on the 54cm. But that doesn't mean you will be. It's a great, very light and stiff frame. I would very happily make the choice to get this bike again.

At 5' 10", I'd go for the 56cm Fuji. I'm 5'11" and ride a 58cm.

EDIT: just looked at the specs. Definitely the Fuji. Much better components for the same price. 105/ultegra for the Fuji and Tiagra/105 for the Scattante. (order of quality from lowest to highest on Shimano components is tiagra -> 105 -> ultegra).

I look forward to building up that sort of mileage. I'm kind of an extreme fitness guy. I run 50+ miles a week, swim about 5 miles a week, and workout at my boxing gym 12-15 hours a week. I pride myself on my conditioning. I know that mileage won't be easy but a lot of it will be easier commuter miles and I'll also be training a little less at my other sports to make time and energy for it.

I just purchased a Scattante CFR Race from performance for about $1300.00 The Scattante is a better deal and actually has a Fuji frame. THe Scattante CFR race has a full shimano ultrgra group. Most of the Fuji's in the price range have thew lower shimano 105's. Add Mavic Krysium wheels, carbon crank etc.. and its one hell of a deal. (ultegra alone cost almost as much as the bike)

One more thing, dont let the Performace sticker fool you, the prices are much lower than the tag. (Mine had a price of well over $2000...I got if for $700 less) ALso, they will give you 20% back on your purchase if you join team perfomance (no brainer) You can then buy shoes/pedals etc..

Get the Scattante...The value is insane. You have to spend well over $3000 to get anywhere close with specialized, trek etc...

Side note: just got back from a 60 mile ride, the bike was amazing.

That scattante looks like a good deal .... but can someone tell me why they have such "creative" used car lot sales/pricing at performance ? Looks like they have 3 different ( sale ) prices for the same bike, in the store, on the web ... & their catalog. ... and the "starting" price for whatever is on sale is different also. Hmm...
All the various weekend sales about make me lose my mind. One weekend, all bikes are 10% off, then 40 the next, then back to normal the fallowing. Sometimes they throw in various "rebates" , then "piggy-back" an additional 10% ... & so on ...
I rather NOT buy from them knowing I could have saved money, if I buy another weekend. Grrr...

I'll be the first to admit that the name was a poor choice, but if you can get ovet the name, you'll realize it is a hell of a bike for little money. The CFR race frame is Fuji. Other Scattante frames (VERY GOOD--Not cheap) are actually Lynskey frames with the Scattante name.

So in other words Scattante frames are Fuji, Lynskey etc...Its just a name used by performance.

In English Scattante translates to very smart with money and not foolish enough to be hung up on names.
