2009 Penal Tour de France

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2009 Penal Tour de France

Next month 196 prisoners will take part in a 2,300km, 17 town Penal TDF. With no breakaways allowed and watched closely by police, the group will travel around France in the inaugural event starting June 4 in Lille and ending in Paris. There will be no rankings. Along the way riders will stay in hotels rather than jails.

The idea is that the participants could learn the value of teamwork etc to prepare themselves for life on the outside.

Geez, if French prisons are anything like Canada's they're getting a free education. And now an all expenses-paid tour? Almost makes one want to sign up, eh?
