Unemployed from the day job since January. Still have the part time, under the table income, and the lady of the house is having an exceptional year. I'm also in grad school, and I'll finish my MBA in December. I still ride the same number of days as I did this time last year, but the distances have doubled. I imagine it will be this way for a while.

Just joining the club. Got the bad news on monday morning. 6 guys got laid off due to a lack in demand from PGE for our contracting services. Sucks! Was a well paying job, gas card, company vehicle, phone and per diem pay. What can you do? In the end its business.
Going to head back to school this fall for Echotechnician/Sonographer. Work a part time to contribute to the household. The wife makes the big $$$. Good luck all. |
Being unemployed officially sucks. I feel like such a frickin bum. And the boredom!! Currently applications in for a fair few jobs but quite some of them don't even reply with a confirmation, the hounds! I expect at least that, out of politeness. Hopefully will be accepted for this years intake of School teacher training (last resort career eek!).
I also hear ya on the feeling crap whilst out doing anything that isn't looking for a job. Hard to enjoy oneself knowing friends and family are all busting a gut while you go out for a leisurely wee cycle or whatever :( |
Back from the interview, went well - but there is a group still to be interviewed. Will hear about the job in two weeks.
Would be an interesting job that is for certain. Is it for me, we'll see. |
Well, I was hired at my first regional airline in February, 2008. I was furloughed July 1st ,2008. Applied everywhere and finally got hired at my second regional airline in February, 2009. Currently employed there still and mostly hating it. I make less than minimum wage and have hardly any free time. I won't be going home at all this month. I've moved my road bike down to NM where my crashpad is and ride it on my days off. I was definitely riding a hell of a lot more when I was unemployed (though I was working part time). Anyway, this economy sucks and I won't be surprised if I'm furloughed again soon.

Being self employed and working endless hours, I think I'll get a job and finally have the weekends and evenings off...

Well I'm now in the unemployed club - gave two weeks notice and my last day was Friday. I hated my job, time to find something better.
I'll need to get another job in a month or two - but until then, time to ride!! The weather is nice and I'm gonna fill most of my newly acquired free time with pedaling. (Btw Hida, if you're reading this I'm gonna look for those parts for ya today, I swear!) |
I got out of the USMC in August '08. Got a civilian job making good $$$ until February when I got laid off. Not a bite since. I'm thinking of going back in :dread:

Oh, and I'm still unemployed. |
Terminated
Terminated in April to save the company some money. They kept the guy that didn't have a college education, worked there less years, was a Journeyman less years, but made less money. They did me a favor. I am at home with my newborn daughter, cycling, and back at school with a 3.733 GPA studying Criminal Justice.

Either MS really sucks or you just have a good pair of cojones to quit in times like these. Good luck |

I could ride a bit more than I am, but frankly with my wife earning most of the money, I feel a bit guilty out riding my bike and when I'm riding I'm always thinking about finding a job. |

Has anyone here considered going the temp route? I've been in school on and off for the past 4.5 years, but when I have not been in school, I have worked as a temp.
snipped Even though I am finished school now and could attempt to get a full-time permanent position, I will definitely be considering continuing the temp route in some way or another. I just like the freedom and variety it provides. |

Laid off April 17, after 11 years. I got a decent severance and 4 months access to an outplacement service. I had made a career change 3 years ago (within the same company), and when there was a merger, I got squeezed out on seniority.
I see a lot of positives here. My old company was very stubborn to adopt new technology (they refused to recognize any Adobe products!). I look forward to latching on with a more progressive company where I can actually use all my skills. The job search has been keeping me very busy. I'm able to get out for a ride once or twice a week. I've also been hitting the gym just to keep my sanity. |
