Cheap Garmin 305's

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap Garmin 305's

Anybody looking for a 305, you can get one from Digital Oasis on ebay for $152, with HR strap and speed/cadence.

Thy're refurbished, but have a 1 year factory warranty. At that price, they're as cheap as most full function wireless computers with HR, cadence altimeter, and no GPS.

And I'm not a shill (even though the outfit is based in Jacksonville.)

sounds good and I have been thinking of getting one.
One thing I have been reading is that the 305's were stopping (turning off) mid ride and had to be turned back on? A barttery issue I think. Maybe a when hitting bumps?Anybody have this problem?

If you look at various reviews, some 305's suffer from one of two problems - the intermittent shut-off, and shorter than spec battery life. There are workarounds for both issues.

The shut-off problem happens when a bump causes the 305 unit to loose contact with the sensors in the mount. The work-around is usually a large rubber band, although there was a post here a while ago where one BF member rigged up a more permanent and nicer looking solution with some sort of foam rubber.

The battery life problem seems to be less common. The main workaround involves buying a solar usb type charger and mounting that on your top-tube or handle bars. The charger will keep the battery topped of while you ride.

Personally, I was going to pass on the 305 and maybe save up for a 705 or something from Polar, but for $150 it's too good to pass up.

Making room for the 310XTs...

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=27335#

The 305 will be on mega-closeout soon just about everywhere. In fact, if you want a used one, I'll have one for sale shortly.

All I know is I got it packed in a factory box in 2 days, with every thing in apparent good order, and its working.

Their ebay feedback looks pretty good.

Man, I was thinking about getting a forerunner for running and biking, but $150 for an edge is a heck of a good deal.

But worth taking money from my new wheels fund?... I duno... (with stock wheels in the 2100g range no explanation should really be needed)

I am thinking the same thing... I also found some Forerunners 305 on eBay for $150. Just type in 'Garmin 305' and it's the first result.

Does anyone know if the Forerunner comes with a handlebar mount? Also, any runners here who use the Forerunner for both running and cycling? I'm not that serious about running, but it seems like it might be nice to be able to use it for both. Are there any compelling reasons to get the Edge instead?

Well no cadence with the forerunner (unless you buy the wireless thingy for it +$40-60) And the edge has a barometer which could be nice, but some programs like sports tracks can add elevation to a workout based on your location and existing topo data so it's probably not super necessary.

My brothers forerunner came with a mount that looked like it could go on handlebars, but since most of these on ebay are refurb they may have a few less extras.

i won one off of ebay for 138 from them last friday. They shipped it tuesday and got it yesterday, that was with free shipping and living in Northern VA.

I have one 305 that has been having the shut off issue and I called garmin last week to get an RMA to send it in for warranty work. I have been getting the shut off since about Febuary on the one i bought brand new from REI last September. But I also use this for my commutes for training and go through all sorts of weather.

I use HR based training for tri's and cycling and the fact that i have 3 events in the next six weeks I didnt want to be without an HRM for the next 15 days which is what I was qouted is the return time to get it back from Garmin for warranty work.

no bike mount comes with the Forerunner. i have both. there are compelling reasons to buy the sport specific model for said sport, that is why they make two different models.

edge = bigger screen able to display more fields, longer batter life, CAD included.
forerunner = smaller screen, shorter batter life, no CAD, big for wearing on the wrist.

later.

Cool, thanks. Maybe I'll go with the Edge then, since I seriously suck at running and no cadence is a deal breaker.
