Anyone else ride a Scattante?
I just bought a Scattante from Performance a couple days ago, and so far really like it. It's the 2008 race full carbon frame with Ultrega components.
When I started my bike shopping, I was only riding the name brand bikes, but the Tiagra componentry felt horrible to me. My budget was $1300 or so, and everything around that price range at the bike shops had mostly sub 105 components, or mixed. I didn't really want to go to Performance because I'm a total name brand snob on everything...but the more I learned about components, the more I thought I could get a decent deal there.
So to see a full carbon bike with ultrega components really was surprising for under my budget....and it rode great and is light as a feather. But I've told 2 people who also ride about my bike at work and they've never even heard of Scattante. lol...:-(
Almost all the reviews say it's a great bargain and nice bike...but some others saying the carbon frame isn't as good as other carbon frames. So another question I have is...how can it be a bad carbon frame? I mean...as long as I don't crash, when would it ever even break. What makes a "bad frame?" I'm used to riding aluminum, so I really won't even know if carbon is a softer ride, but it is pretty smooth.
Anyone else ride these or Fujis? (they said they were made by the same company) Is there any real difference in frames over the name brands? The ultrega components on the Performance store bikes were just super cheap compared to the brand stores in Denver. I test rode a fuji which felt great too, but decided to go with full carbon...just wondering what people thought of these bikes.

More probably than catastrophic failure, a lower quality carbon frame may be heavier and less stiff than a higher quality one, even if it comes out of the same factory it may not benefit from some more expensive manufacturing processes and/or materials. But all that said the difference will likely be very tough to notice. One of my team mates who wins/podiums regularly, rides that exact bike. He is on his second frame due to a crash (bike v car) replacement. The frame doesn't seem to be holding him back any, though he is some what self-conscious of the huge logos plastered all over that thing.

I had a Scattante R660, which is aluminum, before I got my new carbon Cannondale. I thought it was a good bike, actually really good considering how much it cost. My new Cannondale certainly feels better to ride (more solid in the turns, smoother all around, etc.) but that's comparing carbon to aluminum in addition. But I don't think the Scattante will hold you back and all, and with Performance's return policy you should be in good hands I would guess.
And anyway, I don't think their carbon would be so low-quality as to actually be dangerous so I wouldn't worry about that.

I have a buddy who rides an R660 and regularly drops me. It's not the best bike I've ever seen, but for the price, no one expected that. His engine is > than mine.

apparently, he was riding an average slow A/fast B ride, and while he was slowing down for a stop sign the top tube and down tube on his Obea frame literally cracked in half. i don't know what model it was, but i do know it was only about 6 months old, and the only thing that was holding his bike together were the cables. after the frame cracked, he went over the bars, and landed head first.

I rode many miles on my 660 Scattante. Great bikes for the money.

Scattante used to be the house brand frame for SuperGo. When Performance bought them, Scattante became the house brand frame for Performance. Not great, not terrible. Just a cheap frame is all. It'll get the job done.
I ride a Scattante 'cross bike frame. Again, not great, not terrible. Just a $300 frame to build up a budget 'cross bike so I can race 'cross.

Fuji
My wife borrowed a friends Fuji Roubaix Pro and rode it for a month and really liked it. We just bought a new 2009 Fuji Roubaix Pro at Performance for less than $1000 (105 and Ultegra) for her. She really likes the bike and it was only $50 more than my Cannondale Synapse 7 (and the Fuji is much lighter with higher grade components). I had read some online Scattante customer reviews (nothing from the pros I suppose) and the comments seemed to be good. I'm guessing it all depends on what you want. Schwinn seems to even be coming back. :-)

I test rode a $3k bike before I bought the Scattante, and yes it was a nice ride, but it was really just the shifting that was so noticeably better than the cheaper components than the bikes in my budget had. Other than that...I wasn't real sure what I needed to be paying attention to.
When I found the Scattante with full Ultrega, and it rode the same as the high end bike...only half the price, it seemed like the way to go. If everything is sound, doesn't it all really come down to the rider anyway? It's not like I'm a pro racer...just doing some long rides and half Ironman, etc.
I used to ride a converted MTB with other road racers, and back when I was riding all the time and training, I could pass them pretty easy...so sometimes I question the need for a 2-3k+ bike. The same with new TV's and picture quality. After a certain point...the minisule differences just aren't worth paying for. Then again, maybe I just don't know enough about cycling to tell.

Yes... I have an expensive bike. It's nice to ride. It's nice to look at. I keep it in the house and seeing it makes me want to ride. I enjoy cleaning it, polishing it, just... possessing it. But, none of that makes me any faster. Well, maybe riding more often/being comfortable does, but my point is that your legs do the work. The amount of loss you'll get via frame flex is TINY, so aside from a few hundred grams saved, no bike will make me faster.

One god thing about Performance is their guarantee. It's 100%. So if you keep your receipt, after a few years, if you want to upgrade your bike and want store credit or your money back, you just bring the bike in and they will take it no problem. I just returned a 3 year old Giant to my local Performance shop and they took it back. Their corporate HQ will be sending me a check. Otherwise, they could have credited my credit card account.

I ride a R660, I like riding a bike that is cheap, that way it's just a tool to get the job done, no personal attachment for me It will serve me for a couple more years racing untill i graduate college and make some money, even then i don't think i'll get something too expensive...maybe a cadd 10? lol.
I have to admit it seems like a allot of people that ride cheaper bikes have the small man syndrome: "omg i just dropped a guy on a carbon bike with full kit on my scattante!" While It's fun riding otf of a group with expensive bikes, i've had old guys on beaters bikes drop me. It's all about the engine

I have a Scattante Americano. It does its job of commuting pretty decent. Other than commuting, I have a F75 for riding.

I purchased a Scattante CFR race a month ago (08) and love it. You got a great bike, enjoy it.
I tried the Specialized Robaix, Tarmac, and Trek bikes and couldnt come close in price to to the Scattante. Full ultegra bikes from the big names will set you back well over 3K...
I think as more people here actually go out and ride these bikes, they may realize what an insanely good deal they are.
But there are many that get hung up with the name.

The road bike I'm on now is built up on a Scattante aluminum frame and works very well. The built quality and finish were excellent and I'm sure its kind of a generic Asian good quality frame, such as goes into plenty of name brands. I always thought the name was kind of arbitrary and cheesy - like does anyone think its Italian really? But I just bought it to ride, and it does do the job there well.

My bike is a GT GTR full carbon from performance, I wouldn't be surprised if it shared the same frame w/fuji and Scat. I nailed a 3/4" bolt w/both wheels @ 30mph plus and blew out BOTH tires and dented both rims, before I pulled over I thought the frame was broken, it was ok. Got home and inspected it, looked good, surprised me.

Yep. A Scattante SSR steel frame for my single speed commuter/truly nasty weather bike. Scattante frames are a great deal for the price. Forget the bike snobs and ride what works for you.
