Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Custom Wheel Builder

I'm looking at having a custom set of wheels built for a new bike build (Edge Composite 1.38 Tubulars laced to Campy Record hubs). Has anyone bought wheels from ProWheelBuilder.com? They seem to have quality prices, but I'd be interested to see if anyone had comments on the quality of their builds.

If anyone has a suggestion for another builder who does great work with Edge rims, I'm all ears for that too.

I e-mailed them twice (once on Monday, once on Thursday) to get a recommendation, prepared to spend $1200 on wheels.

I never got a response - though I did get read receipts.

Whether or not they can put a wheel together, dunno.

That said - I went with Rich @ wheelbuilder.com again.

Dave (owner) of Fastrack Bicycles in Santa Barbara can build some of the finest wheels on the planet.

Sometimes the local talent is as good or better as the fancy boys.

+1 on going local

There also usually easier to get a hold of and closer if something does go wrong.

I'm in the process of moving, so I don't really have a "local" shop right now. Anyone in the DC area (where I'm moving to) have a good suggestion?

wheelbuilder.com is superb. I got an Edge 45 wheelsets from them. Competitive pricing and great service. Rich has a degree in engineering and he is extremely precise in his approach. His company did wheelsets for 7 Olympic teams for the 2008 Olympics. He has wheel building literally down to a science and he provides first class support and service.

Unless you can get your hands on some older Campy hubs, you will have a problem with this setup. Campy hubs are only available in 32 hole these days. I think that the most number of holes you can get on the Edge (and most other carbon) rims is 28.

I bought a set of wheels from ProWheelbuilder.com (Reynolds DV46C rims with DT240S hubs) last year, then had the rear rebuilt with a PowerTap hub this year. So far, there have been no issues with the wheels, but they are on a TT bike and don't get beat up.

The prices at ProWheelBuilder.com are good, but they are even better if you later buy other wheels from them and take advantage of their incentive program. However, as many have noted, communication with them is sometimes erratic.

Another recommendation for Wheelbuilder.com. A great product and great service. Going local also has the advantage that if your wheel ever needs service you can easily take it back to the builder instead of shipping it. Fortunately Rich at wheelbuilder.com is local for me (SoCal).

For my money, Travis, master wheel builder, at All American Bikes in Damascus, MD is THE MAN. Not far outside DC.

I got a set of wheels (Reynlds DV46C on White Ind. hubs) from prowheelbuilder last year. They are race-only wheels so they don't get a lot of use, but they are build and have held up fine. It took a while to get them but prowheelbuilder let me know what was going on.

Richard at Prowheelbuilder.com com is the best! Sometimes hard to get a hold of (because he is SUPER busy building wheels) but if you do, he will do whatever he can to make sure you get some of the best build wheels anywhere, the best answers to your questions, and the best customer service. I have had 3 sets of wheels built by them in the past yr. All three sets have been flawless!

I sent Richard a message/simple question about turnaround time on a particular build last Friday and got a response in a couple of hours. That said, I have not placed an order with him...yet.
