non cyclists don't get it

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

non cyclists don't get it

i bumped into an old friend on my bike yesterday and was proudly showing off my shiny pretty bike which i had just washed and polished after the previous ride.

His only response was, "Why don't you get a kickstand? it must be so inconvenient when you want to stop."

lol; you should get a carbon-fiber kickstand. OCLV preferred.

this whole no kickstand thing is a trend bound to die, like fixed gears or freak bikes.

A trend? I'm pretty sure road riders and racers have been riding without kickstands since at least 1993.

My friends; highway foremen, greens keeper, glass blower, paralegal, silk screener, etc all respect what I do...

When we get together in someones garage, I will bring my bikes and work on them as we drink beer...

They are always amazed on how high tech the gear is, how light the bikes are, how uncomfortable the saddle must be...

Then they see me riding, crushing souls and getting crushed...

They get it...

I like kickstands, but they belong on coffee shop and grocery bikes, not road bicycles.

They also laugh about how skinny I am and yet I still complain I need to lose weight...

You have your passion they have theirs...

Maybe they do not have one...

When I ride my bike into school there is a guy a little younger than I am that likes to call me Lance, and asks me why I don't bring my wheel in, etc...

I entertain him and we all get a laugh, I even took the time to bring my front wheel in one day. It was funny.

He weighs, at the very least, 275lbs. He also talks of how he's timed it, so that he can cook and eat a burger off his single burger foreman grill at the same rate, allowing him to get his three or four burgers in a row at maximum efficiency.

I'm fine with him poking fun, as I don't really find it demeaning... more complimentary, given the source.

Fixed that for you. I'm sure its much longer, but I can only personally vouch for a few years before that.

So it really is somewhat "about the bike". I mean, if all of us didn't enjoy our bikes as much as we do and the gear associated, we could easily find another form of exercise that doesn't require as much gear. I played basketball my whole life and was competitive in high school/college, went to camps etc. I enjoyed riding back then, but as I was able to afford nicer stuff, my interest in cycling grew.

There are people on walking, running, hiking forums right now with the same passion for those activities that don't require as much "stuff". Don't get me wrong, I love my pre-work 35 mile rides around the resevoirs with no one on the roads, or my 100 mile solo rides. But if I had to do them on a POS bike, I'd probably start playing basketball competitively again.

For as much as some like to say it is about riding and not the bike, then why do these people all have expensive bikes? If all of our fancy bikes were taken away by the government (hypothetically), and all that was available were 30lb beater bikes, how many here would continue to ride like we do? We wouldn't be posting all kinds of pictures. We are all guilty of this, even those super cool racer wannabees here that minimize their love for their machines.

And the few people that post here who don't wear all the garb and ride old heavy beater bikes are considered "Freds". Makes me think that they are the "real cyclists" because they don't give a crap.

So, your friend doesn't "get it" because he simply doesn't have the same feeling about bicycles. He may get that same feeling when he sees a boat, motorcycle, fishing rod, or fill in the blank. But for us here, it is about the bike.

In the Midwest you don't drink in a garage until you are married.

Are you sure? I think I'll watch Stars and Watercarriers again and see if I can spot a kickstand on Eddy's bike. Look closely at Fuente's machine in that film - he's using bar end shifters!
