Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

An open letter to Greg LeMond

Dear Greg,

I'm roughly your age and have been a fan since you went to Europe. I feel I owe you a personal and sincere apology.

I was seen today by any number of people sucking real hard whilst on one of your higher end frames. I know you have no current distributor for those frames but I still feel I did you wrong today and I hope I haven't hurt your chances of picking up a new distributor. I certainly didn't mean to do this to you either directly or indirectly.

All I can say is: Dude I'm sorry, really sorry. There's a race in Stuart (FLA) Saturday and I'll try to make it up to you but you know what they say about chicken, eggs and counting.

PS: I ought to CC this to the Campagnolo and Mavic people as well but I feel that I've hurt you more.

PPS: I'll bet everyone who read this thought I'd be talking about Lance Armstrong and/or doping.
This is much more important.

Sincerely:

A true(ly depressed) fan

I know exactly what you mean. I ride/rock/slay a Lemond Buenos Aires, full carbon beautiful red and white with very nice components. It's a shame I can't get over 12 MPH.

Dear Walter,

I am shocked and appalled at the inexcusable and deplorable level of your conditioning. You're despicable! You are going to have to step it up, mister. Your concern about riding one of my bikes is indeed warranted. I can't have this kind of ineptitude casting dispersion-by-association on one of my cutting edge machines. It's embarrassing, Walt. I WON'T HAVE IT!

You have two weeks to get yourself in better riding condition, something minimally commensurate with the standards my bicycles deserve. Otherwise I will be forced to repossess your Lemond and replace it with a Trek, donating the Lemond to some more deserving, fit individual . . . maybe even a girl.

You'll be hearing from me.

GL

(PS: Regards and much love to my main man BillyD for allowing me this opportunity to rip you a new one on BF. Peace out!)

I said I'm sorry! That works for my kids. My wife is dragging me to the Stuart race so perhaps there'll be redemption. However, she was one of the ones who dropped me the other day...

Me and three friends are riding an organized century a few weeks ago, with nice, staffed pit stops every twenty miles or so. I'm on a carbon Bianchi C2C. Next guy is riding a carbon Specialized S-Works. Third guy has a brand-new carbon Look 566. Last guy, who doesn't own a bike, is using my orange, steel LeMond Poprad cyclocross bike with some crappy road tires tossed on it.

At every stop we made, multiple people blew right past the nice bikes of the first three of us, and the substantially nicer bikes still of many other riders, and checked out and complimented the LeMond. Particularly the European folks. WTF? I love the bike and all, but . . .

Everytime I think about Greg Lemond, I remember watching the final TT of the TdF back in '89. That, for me, was the greatest moment in sports history. And despite the fact that he's been involved with so much unsavory drama since then, I'll probably always be a huge Lemond fan.

Yea a pretty nasty thread (references to Le Monds uncle and all ) but what do expect in the daze (sic) of Armstrong Inc. He cannot put a foot wrong. Sucks asphalt in the Giro and the rider ahead of him is blamed. I watched that stage and that's total bull****. Sir Lancelot was at fault. Anyway, i believe Dave Wiens who thinks LA is a total tosser with his head up his a-hole.

I am trying to suck really hard on my new Lemond Tete de Course and I'm doing a great job! Way to go Greg, great bike, and with my 44 year old tush on it, the carbon fiber is so impressive and light. I should post a powertap profile just to prove my suckage.... Wish I knew how....

I'm looking for a Livestrong / Armstrong sticker to put on the bike. That should make you happy, right Greg?

Bad assessment of causality: I am no fan of Armstrong. It's just that I'm not very fond of LeMond or Landis, either.

Agreed. I got in to racing in the mid 80's, so Greg indelibly became "The Man" in my opinion. Between LeMond, Hampsten, Bauer, and the 7-Eleven team, it was an awesome time to get in to cycling.

What are you referring to specifically?

Any way, back to the original topic. In the same line of thinking, I should probably hunt down an e-mail address for Mr. Merckx very soon...

I did not mean this thread to be serious......

Well the wallowing in self-pity part is serious but otherwise...

Hey guys & gals,

Greg asked me to post the following responses for him. These comments do not necessarily reflect the opinions of BillyD in any way.
