stem length vs angle

Are stems measured from 'center to center', or are they measured in horizontal distance. I know this doesn't make much of a difference with small angle stems, but with a 30° angle it could be a huge difference.

It's center to center. You can calculate the actual reach, or use the chart:

Depends on the stem. Most seem to measure extension but for example 3T appears to use reach.

+1

although i think reach is stupid because bikes also have different head tube angles which changes reach again.

Awesome thanks! I'll take my chances with the stems (other than 3t) being measure c2c.

Yes, I think it is extremely stupid that 3T measures by reach...

I guess I could start a new thread, but has anyone used a stem with only ~80mm reach on a TT bike? Just looking for anyone with anecdotal info on handling...
