looking for a good place to ride in ontario

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just moved to kitchener, and was looking for some good routes with hills and curves. I don't mind if I have to drive to the location. thanks

would you mind sharing them? I've been out a few times but hills/mountains and curves doesn't seem to be too common.

I'm planning to go out for the whole day with a friend, it'd b nice to ride some different terrain

Well if you come over to Guelph there are a few routes I know of. Look on Speed River Bicycle's website for them... other than that the Cambridge Tour de Grand is coming up very soon.

here are some nice roads. highlights include climbs in wolverton, grandridge drive cambridge, hawkesville hill, crosshill, bamberg. there are endless routes crisscrossing these roads. in addition, beyond campbellville, there's rattlesnake point, bell school line and other roads up and down the niagara escarpment (if you're riding to and from k-w, it's 160km).

^^
Also some pretty good rollers in the Shakespeare/Amulree area, a little to the west of the loop given there. Similar to the terrain around Bamberg. Not much in the way of curves, however.

Really, there just aren't many hills in the area bigger than a couple hundred feet from top to bottom, and most rural roads are pretty straight. The alps, it definitely isnt.

I live in Orangeville and the Caledon Hills will make you think you're riding in the mountains (Ok so it's the Niagara Escarpment). Beautiful country. Visit caledon Hills Cycling shop in Inglewood and they will give you some great routes.

I am not quite sure where KItchener is (I am finally preparing to move to Burlington), but have you looked along the Niagara Escarpment? There seem to be many god routes there with plenty of climbing. I drive through there often when I am visiting and see a multitude of cyclists, Bring your camera.

Cheers,

Brian J.

will check it out, thanks!

as an aside, it seems that every direction is a headwind. Go south towards the headwinds thinking coming back will be nice, nope not really still headwind.

most of the winds go in a south-east or north-east direction, depending on time of day, season and whatnot.
if it's cold, it's from the north, if it's warm it's from the south.

Windsor is a really nice place to ride around in. If you can follow the river and the lake up to Wapole island its very nice too. I have ridden around Lake St Clair many times. The water up by Sarnia is as blue as blue can be.
