converting 30 speed to 20 speed

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

converting 30 speed to 20 speed

Hello, I am new to the forum and had a question regarding a 30 speed to 20 speed conversion. I have a trek 4.7 which is the 30. My brother has the 5.2 which is the 20. I really like the way his feels and was curious if this conversion is possible without spending big bucks. Thanks

Possible? Yes. Big bucks? Depends on your definition of "big bucks".

You need:
  • New crankset
  • New bottom bracket
  • New front derailleur
  • New cables
  • New handlebar tape
  • And somebody to install it all for you.

Your front shifter is going to have one extra "click" in it that won't do anything; you can get a double-specific shifter to "solve" that problem, but shifters are expensive.

Meh. You're probably better fof riding it at least a year or two, then sell it and buy a new bike with standard gearing.

30 good, 20 better, 10 best! Convert it to a 1 X 10 and you might like that even more.

This may not be needed. I've changed a triple to a double and all that was needed was to remove the small chain ring and change the bottom bracket. The front derailleur works fine with a little adjusting of the limit screws. Not sure why you'd need new cables and handlebar tape for this purpose.

Changed mine for less than $100.

why downgrade?

ever wonder if the difference in feeling comes from the different frame levels?

ok, thanks for all the input. I dont know what it is, but it just seems to shift better and has a better feeling to it. And if youre wondering we do have the same components. Thanks again, any more info would be appreciated, otherwise I guess the best thing to do is go back to the LBS and talk to them about it.

Go do some extended climbing that includes some 12-18% grades and see which one feels better. I am converting my compact 50/34 to a triple next week. I want my knees to keep me biking in my 60-70s so spinning is my friend.
