Can a girl be a poseur?

I'm curious about this. I have a friend that has the nicest gear, Zipp's, King hubs, SRAM Red, the works, and has bought two top end frames in as many seasons.

I don't buy gear like that because (a) It's pricey and (b) I would get my slow ***** laughed off the back of the paceline.

But she is a girl and this seems to make it different. Thoughts?

DScott 06-01-09 08:14 PM

Girls are different, that's for sure.

JacoKierkegaard 06-01-09 08:14 PM

Would the term be "poseuse" perhaps?

Masseur/masseuse, sabreur/sabreuse, etc.

1slowbastard 06-01-09 08:15 PM

PM me her phone number. I'd like to get to the bottom of this.

psuaero 06-01-09 08:16 PM

I think we're going to need a picture of her in the poseur gear to figure this out.

Boudicca 06-01-09 08:30 PM

Maybe there's an e on the end, as in poseure.

And of course. Why not? Why let the guys have all the fun (and all the bling)?

My thinking was that maybe this is just an extension of the fixation that some women have with fashion.

Look at this thread, and tell me guys don't care how they look on a bike. :p

girls on bikes are too rare to ever be found at fault.. well, girls on really expensive fixies kinda make me cringe a bit. i met this girl once, who could barely ride her bike, and later in the evening we got into a bike conversation where she mentioned how she owned some fancy ass Keirin frame with all NJS parts, must have cost around 2 or 3 grand, and she could barely stop on her less expensive italian fixie, omg! she would get into an accident with a car because she couldn't stop, and then curse at them like a mad woman.

Pfft.... If your only outlet for judging a girl, is on a bike.... Then surely, they can do no wrong....

That said.... Some people have money to spend, and have no problem doing so.. It is subjective, and if someone has money to spend on a bike with no regard to their level... No biggie.... Who cares... Let them cycle (pun intended) through all the top gear...

However, if you have no more data on this lady then the fact she has bought this or that, with no idea of the how/why.... Then there is no reason to judge or call her a 'poseur'....

Some advice.... Never compare yourself to others... Compare yourself to you...

Girl + bike = universally good. Why is this even being discussed?

max power 06-01-09 10:17 PM

Must be all that sugar and spice....

FWIW I've never met a girl poseur. I've spoken to /met/etc lots of women in kit but I've never met a female poseur. Double standard? Certainly, but who cares.

Anyone with a conscience.

unterhausen 06-01-09 10:25 PM

I don't think that being a poseur means that you have a bike that is better than your abilities. You also have to b.s. your abilities.

I have a conscience. I also really do give a dam about a lot of things. Wondering if a girl on a bike in full team kit is a poseur or not isn't one of those things. I just enjoy the view and the tranquility of knowing I don't have anything to prove to anyone by making dumb remarks about things I should keep my pie hole shut about.

But hey, some people will try to make everything into a Peeing contest.

Where in hilly NorCal do you ride that you don't see girls on bikes?

Granted, we aren't out there in the same numbers as men, but certainly we aren't a rarity.

Maybe you aren't riding in the girly places. :innocent:

Even Dick Cheney is speaking in favor of gay marriage these days.

I was talking about the existence of double standards. Do you even read? Not caring about the existence of double standards because they happen to suit your prejudices is despicable. Don't want to be told that you're despicable? Don't say things like this:

I can tell you a girl wouldn't waste her time worrying about it.

Wait, are you saying we can't make exceptions for girls that are hot? I mean, if they're really attractive, can we let them get away with stuff we normally wouldn't tolerate in others? Can we just pay them less to make up for it?
