Help Please, New to a bent spoke.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help Please, New to a bent spoke.

Please give me advice on what to do, i've never had this happen.

This happened because my friend swerved into my rear wheel, and his drop bars got caught into my spokes and so this happened.

Wheel:
-Bontrager SSR Clinchers.

*Also my carbon fiber seat stays have a small chip, should i be concerned?

--Thanks.

Take it to your LBS and have the spoke replaced and ask them their opinion on the chip in the seat stay.

replace the spoke. i would venture to guess that SS chip is fine, but get a second opinion from someone IRL. It could just be a cosmetic chip...

Would any one know how much it would replace a spoke?

Spokes are cheap, but if you can't do it yourself you'll be paying for labor.

It looks like a fairly standard spoke. There should be no problem with your LBS having it in stock.

The parts and labor should be less than $20. The spoke and nipple will run about $2 and $15 labor.

Is the wheel still true? If so, I'd probably wouldn't bother replacing the spoke. That's an unlikely place for a spoke to break, and the odds are you can ride the wheel for a long time and be just fine.

Admittedly, replacing the spoke is inexpensive, and easy, but I'm cheap and lazy.

Yup ..... I wouldn't be in a rush unless it really bugs you. Heck, you could even straighten it out a bit so it looks better.

If the wheel is true, it'll probably be fine without replacing.

But it is a wheel with a lower spoke count and may evenual cause a problem. On a 36 or 32 spoke wheel I wouldn't even care.

Buy some tools, research how to take off a cassette and how to replace a spoke. No rush to do it though.

If you want to be cheap and get the job done, get a spoke wrench and buy a new spoke and do the job yourself. You can use your bike's brake calipers or zip ties as a truing stand if you want.

Also, while you have the cassette off to replace the spoke you can take off that dork disc.

But only if you know what you're doing. You'll probably screw up the wheel if you've never done it before.

Nope my wheel seems like it needs a major true which will cost 25 bucks at the most. It was able to take me home from the sight of the accident which was about 3 miles away, and going home was all uphill. However, i had the quick release of the brake pads open because the wheel just couldnt keep straight. Hopefully i'm not dealing with a warped wheel yet. So i don't think i should ride it until it is properly checked.

Mine wasn't majorly trued, but I had to take mine in today. I overhauled my front hub yesterday and discovered a really loose spoke on the front (the wheel was mostly true even with the loose spoke, but the loose spoke bugged me). After reading up in my Zinn book and Sheldon Brown's site, I bought a spoke wrench and gave it a try...no truing stand mind you, and screwed it up.

Took it in, they made the repair in about 10 minutes and charged me $13..perfectly true wheel. Worth it.

$20 bucks is a cheap price to pay for peace of mind and a job done right.
That's the shop rate where I go, though I have found if i take off tire, tube and cassette, and just show up with the wheel I only get charged $10, usually done while I putter around the store.

I had the same thing happened to me a while back. Somewhat different circumstances but the same result.

I took the wheel into the LBS and they said that if the wheel was true and the spoke was holding to just leave it like that. About 1000 miles later, the spoke broke while I was riding it. Fortunately, I was going slow when it finally gave way but a spoke that is bent like that is weaker than the others and should be replaced.

As I was told many years ago when I had a spoke replaced, "that's $1 for the spoke, and $19 for knowing how to install it".
