Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm always down in SM during the week. I commute from Orange County, so I don't know the areas well. I should bring down my bike and check out these roads sometime. Are they close in relative to Twin Oaks off the 78? I Noticed you said the last picture was around Twin Oaks, haven't seen anything remotely close to these roads, I must explore more.

Check the So Cal Regional Forum, CalimariChris has a post of the good/common/longer North San Diego County routes. Look at the maps and figure how to tailor them to length you want. Moderate/decent hilly until you head east of the 15, then you might hit some good climbs.

It's Chicago, we don't have open roads. But here are a few thousand cyclists creating open roads just for us to ride

South France. Slept right @ the beach that night.

Southern part of France. Massif Central. The road was pretty nicely paved and empty to boot.

From the same trip in Southern France. Can't remember the location tho.

Pont du Gard. No cars, but enough tourists. Us included. hehe.

Quality of the pics are not the best, since those are scans from old slides.
