Rest days

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rest days

Do suck. I'm taking one today. Going to the oral surgeon who may re-cut my tooth (depends on the evaluation) and after 35+ straight days on the bike I may have developed a touch of patellar tendonitis under my arthritic right knee. A day off is just what the doctor ordered.

But I'm not happy about it. If you hear about some maniac losing it and going postal in Orange or Rockland County NY in the news today, don't say I didn't warn you.

a day you have oral surgery is not a rest day.

I won't know if I'm having the operation until he evaluates. It's either more antibiotics and leave it alone (the antibiotics he put me on made the pain subside within 48 hours), re-do the surgery or yank the tooth (and I'd have to have an implant up the road).

Either way, what could be more fun than starting your week @ 8:15AM Monday morning with a little oral surgery? The way I look at it, it's all uphill from there.

Sitting in the dentist chair for a few hours is rest enough, just do an early evening ride after meds wear off.

You post so much here that I was thinking you don't even ride a bike. Where do you find the time to ride and post post post?

That's a no brainer, heck I'd stand on the coast with one of those Poseur jerseys then proceed to sluggishly make my way up a climb cursing my weak legs in French.

They opened the gum, the tooth is cracked, it's coming out next week. And the incision site is killing me. Hoping the Advil kicks in. If it's still killing me by 4PM, time for Percoset. Ouch.

Actually, I was hoping more for random babbling, but good to hear about the pain, I mean sorry about the pain.

Won't help the oral pain, but arthritic knees respond well to gelatin. Mine did anyway. You can buy a one month canister of Knox in the supplement aisle at Xmart, CVS, and I'm sure other places. Costs about $15+/-.

I coach collegiate riders and I tell almost everyone to ride 5 days per week and take 2 off. This has vastly reduced injuries and increased their ability to ride faster on their hard days.

If you've really ridden that much you're favoring quantity over quality. Also, you should consider that the people I coach are (likely) younger than you and can recover faster.

In all my years doing this I have never worked with anyone who trained for more than 18 days straight. He is not racing, is being treated for tendonitis and sees a psychologist twice per week to address his extreme tendencies. More isn't better for anyone.
