Pain relievers while riding... what to take?
Still recovering from a recent pavement encounter and was wondering what was best for taking the edge off while not impacting performance. Any difference between ibuprofen versus acetaminophen with regards to performance?

Tylenol is crap. Ibuprofen has been PROVEN to HALT the rebuilding process, so working out can take longer to recover from. Aspirin is probably a better blood thinner than pain reducer. My vote goes for Naproxen Sodium (Aleve), although when taken in higher doses can cause you to hold a little extra water weight... Great anti-inflammatory and pain relief.

I'm recovering from a broken clav. My orthopedic surgeon says to not take Ibuprofen (Advil) because it will slow healing (so of course he prescribed some real stuff).
I usually carry some Aspirins along with the rest of my stuff in the back pocket(s) with me when I ride just in case--either for me or someone I'm riding with.
But If you really want to kill the pain through drugs, I'd probably recommend some sort of opioid like Hydrocodone or Codeine. I'd check with a real doctor for this though.
My recommendation is to just take a few days or week off and ride once again or HTFU and ride. Endorphins + Epinephrine is a pretty good natural combo.

adrenaline. Better than any over the counter pain reliever I've ever taken.

I read an article recently detailing how regular ibuprofen use in runners impaired recovery. A quick google search should bring it up.
Here:
"Treatment and Prevention of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness" by Connolly et al (Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2003 17(1), 197-208).
Not to mention, the use of NSAIDs during exercise does the exact opposite what you want: your body sends natural signals indicating you are over-stressing, etc. -- the use of a pain reliever impairs that process.

take advil (ibuprofen) or aspirin (asa). tylenol (acetaminophen) is a weak analgesic and does nothing to inhibit inflammation and pain.

Aspirin does not thin the blood, it merely inhibits platelet formation thus mitigates the possibility of blood clotting - to some small effect. That's my understanding anyway.

Interestingly the usantidoping site says it's OK to take Vicodin during competition but you cannot use DHEA.
However, it's not wise to take opioids during riding as it might impair your judgment and reflexes.

Endorphines seem to work best.... at least according to an infamous BF'er.
I'm partial to Ibuprophin

I generally use Ibuprofen as an anit-inflammatory, but not while riding. If you need a pain killer while riding, you might do better spending your time on bike forums. My favorite pain killer for that is red wine.
Interesting....after breaking my collabone, my ortho prescribed Vicoden. It really works, but it also puts you right out of it. Well, puts me out of it anyway. I switched to Ibuprofen and wound up healing on schedule.

Vicodin is addictive and makes you constipated.
For a better addiction, try to enjoy the pain. For constipation, try cheese - in large quantities.
