Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why I am not waving anymore

Been a while since we had a waving thread, but I'll make this short and sweet.

Standing on pedals + Going up a hill 5%ish + 17ish mph + Waving back at neighbor in driveway= One hell of a sore shoulder and 8 skid patches on arm back and hip.

Doctor says it's just a very bad bruise and I probably won't be able to do much with it for the next week.

Only bike damage is a chunk out of the side of my pedal. (phew)

But, I will probably still nod or do the finger lift.

You mean you won't try to ride up a hill with only one arm on the bars anymore.

What exactly you were doing with your other arm (waving, picking your nose, etc.) is irrelevant .

5% at 17 mph eh?

No wonder you crashed. I couldn't take a hand off the bars when putting down 500 watts either.

I was typing almost the exact same thing...damn fool time to take a hand off the bars. In a state like that I will nod to someone...if that.

TdF photographers would like you. Most pro's climbing a 5% grade at 17 mph wouldn't smile and wave.

I'm a big fan of the head nod. I have pretty weak one-handed bike handling skills in the flats, not to mentions uphill.

Yes, at least we know there was no head damage, as indicated by the proper impulse to deny your pain and embarrassment. Did you also walk around where you fell to look for the debris that caused you to fall?

i don't wave anymore because when I was younger and even more incompetent, I simultaneously raised my right hand to signal a driver to pull out and squeezed my left (on a mtn bike with great brakes, at about 20mph). I did an endo like charlie brown, with the bike landing on top of me and all my clothes falling off. I'm not quite that bad anymore, but I like 8 fingers on the bars and 2 on the brakes at almost all times.

Waving is just common courtesy. I fell down once before I started to wave, and still managed to get a small wave in to the guy before my body hit the asphalt. We're not barbarians here people...show some class.

Kudos for having the self-esteem to post this on BF. Had I ever pulled a sweet move like that I'd never post it on here.

If anyone can't accept a nod of the head, they don't deserve any acknowledgment at all. This whole waving thing is complete silliness - except maybe in a land of bumpkins who just discovered cycling. I never take my hands off the handlebars for anyone. A road bike at speed is going too fast for that... and you can easily lose control.

Personally, I appreciate hearing that someone actually fell over because of it - I just never wave because I *feel* like I'll fall over, frankly I'm happy to hear it's not just paranoia. :-)

That still counts as waving (presuming you're referring to the index finger). Fear not, your Fred credentials have not been compromised so we do not regard you as a traitor to the cause.
