Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The thing that is even worse than those bridges are the storm grates along the road that have the lines parallel and are big enough to swallow a tire. Those scare the crap out of me. I haven't ever hit one, but I can't imagine how bad it would be if you did hit one at 30.

What's a road snake?

Wooden briges on quiet country roads. The gaps between the boards, running in the direction of travel, are anything from 1-2 cm, and look hungry to eat a tire for lunch.

Not my pic, but from the Morrison bridge in Portland. Fortunately, there is a concrete sidewalk/bikeway for pedestrians and cyclists. We don't have to ride on the grating.

Pfft. Childs play. I thought we were talking about cattle grids.

I've had an unpatched road crack suck up my wheel while cruising in the mid-20s. Screwed up my front wheel, and me too somewhat. Still, I'd rather hit the pavement than the grater.

Those must suck. I've seen them out west, but I've never had to ride over them.

Meh, you just hit the cattle guards going straight, you feel like your bike is going to get shaken to pieces for a second, but they're not too bad.
I'm having to deal with a nice deep gravel strip in the middle of the road in a couple of twisty descents I ride. New Zealand chip seal sucks

Wimps. I ride over cattle guards on 30mph descents twice a week, at least.

They're a piece of cake, they only look bad.

On the other hand, those cheese grate bridges scare the heck out of me.
