East Coast Hilly Century

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

East Coast Hilly Century

I just learned that the hilly century ride I was planning on doing this year -- the Charlottesville Racing Club's Blue Ridge Extreme -- isn't going to happen for want of an event director. This is a shame, b/c it was a great event last year.

What other really hilly (cumulative 10,000 feet or more of climbing over 100 miles) organized century rides to people know about on the East Coast? Best would be things in the mid-Atlantic states, but I'm willing to travel a little farther for the right event. (I know about the Cheat Mountain Challenge in WV and the Blue Ridge Brutal in NC - both of which sound great. I'm just trying to get a sense for what else is out there.)

Thanks very much!

Civil War Century sposored by the Baltimore Bicycle Club is pretty hilly. I think around 7400feet.

It is in Thurmont Md and goes through battlefields and covered bridges. Sept 12

Check it out https://www.baltobikeclub.org/index.pl/cwc

mountains of misery (might have been in May, not sure); blood sweat and gears; mount mitchell; that thing that ends on grandfather mtn. in NC that I cant think of its name; brasstown baldbuster; six gap; and in september, while not nearly the difficulty of those rides, the baltimore bike clubs civil war century in MD/PA has some nice climbing.

Pink Ribbon Century. Starts in Johnson City, which is in the northeast corner of the state near the Virginia and North Carolina borders. https://www.tricitiesroadclub.org although the link is not up yet. It has over 12,000 feet of climbing and is very challenging. It is in late September. Right at 400 mile drive from Bathesda.

There are a bunch that have a lot of vertical fun!

The Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge (August 1, Monterey, VA) can be summed up thusly: 100 miles, 13,200' of vertical over nine passes. Beautiful scenery and a great organization.

The aforementioned Civil War Century has some good vertical and a wonderful feast at the end (with free, locally-made ice cream), and passes through three Civil War battlefield areas on the century route. This ride typically attracts a huge field of riders.

The Great River Ride (October 11, Westfield, MA) is another great ride: 110 miles and 10,100' of climbing through the Berkshires during fall foliage season - what's not to like?

While not organized, this "6 gaps" ride in VT - https://www.northeastcycling.com/Climbing_Loops.html is 135 miles and 14,500 feet of gain.

Also one in Northern VT with 94 miles/13,000 ft gain.

If Canada is not too far you might be interested in this one:
https://www.velo.qc.ca/voyages/index_...code=grandtour

This year it is rated 4/6 for difficulty - last year it was 5/6 and pretty difficult

Have fun!
