Most Scenic Climbs (w/ pics!)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

^.. Merlin.. What kind of grade does Galibier have.. We just did Ventoux.. When the grade exceeded 15% for much over one Km, many of us bonked. Which has a worse grade you suspect. On a sustained basis.. Ventoux or Galibier.

No.. Us is we guys.. Not a hunger ride but a , this is crazy ride.. Never claimed to be a cat rider. We climbed 900 meters to the Simpson Memorial. I am happy. Plus, the winds were obscene , as one would expect Mt. Ventoux to be.

I've done both. Ventoux is a bit steeper. We came up the side from the Col de Lautaret, which is only 4-5%, and knock offs a lot of the vertical before you get to the Galibier. That route is significantly easier than Ventoux.

But even if you come from the other side, up the Telegraph, the total vertical up the Galiber/ Telegraph combination is about the same as Ventoux but over 1 and 1/3rd as many miles.

And sorry to break it to you, but there's no 15% grade up Ventoux, at least not on the route up from Malaucene.

..^.... We came up from Sault.. My friends Garmin computer's digital read out sure looked like a 15% + grade. He said he'd mail me the graph.. Maybe sometimes they don't give a perfect read out..?
The last 3 Km from Sault was a real pistol. Looking at it was startling. For me at least.. I am told the road from Vaison le Romain to be the worst.?
Mt. Ventoux from Sault. Just a couple days ago...

I think the Garmin grades can be a little overstated.

For example, we saw some mid 20 percents going up Brasstown, and the published profiles top out at 21.

But whether the max grade on Ventoux is 12% or 15%, its definitely a heck of a climb.

This article is pretty cool with profiles for the different routes up Ventoux.

Cool thread bump. The three most gorgeous roads I've ever ridden on are:
  • Going to the Sun Highway, Glacier National Park, Montana
  • Beartooth Pass between Montana and Wyoming
  • Washington Pass in North Cascades National Park

All the pictures I have from those rides are on film, and I don't have a scanner handy to convert them to digital. That would be my list of "jaw droppers" though.

Lake Patzcuaro, Mexico and surrounding areas. AT 7,500 ft elevation, it is a wonderful area to ride pretty much year round. Sorry, the pics were taken with my cheap camera, so they don't do justice.

I haven't done Beartooth Pass, but given the company you've put it in I'm going to have to go check it out. Here are pics from #1 and #3 on your list.

Always a fan of mt. Baldy. This particular day it was supposed to rain, so 95% of the people who were going to come bailed out. 4 of us had a great climb though!

Baldy data for those who may not be familiar with it.
https://connect.garmin.com/activity/54909717

Also, one of the guys forgot his shoes. So, he did the ride in running sneakers.

Well, that's what you got for posting a pic of a low, slabby, choss pile rock in a state known for its alpine/mountaineering. How about some pics from the North Cascades like Mt. Shuksan?
