Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bummer. I guess I'm not understanding the failure correctly. Sounds like a trip to Trek (covered or not) is in order. Calfee would be an option, but probably only if Trek won't do the work.

These guys used to repair frames too. Kestrel and Calfee send their frames to him for paint and used to refer customers to him for repairs.

Ti is generally considered to be bulletproof in bike construction. But then, it rides like Ti...

Sorry I will try to explaine; the dropout has two "fingers" one goes into the chainstay the other goes into the seatstay. The "finger" that went into the chainstay is the one that has debonded. The one that goes into the seatstay is still in tight as ever. So the whole dropout moves about 3/8th's of an inch at the worst but since it is still stuck into the seatstay you cant really move it out of the way to clean it or get any glue in to it. Savy?

since it is a Trek product, I am of the belief that they will be the best suited to do the repair. I am pretty sure that I will end up paying for the work, its a bitter pill but I am not looking for a hand out, I bought used, it was a gamble, it didnt pay off. wont happen again. I still love their products. best case they fix it, at no charge. slightly less best case, they fix it but charge me a reasonable fee.

Take it to your dealer. Show them your frame. They might not even ask for a receipt to prove you're the original owner, many manufacturers don't, and your dealer likely won't care.

What you want is called Hysol. 9695 is killer good as is 9396. Look around on the web for where to get it. You'll only need 1 tube (contains both parts), but it'll be expensive. It doesn't matter. It's cheaper than sending it off to Wisconsin, and quite possibly the same or better than what they would do.

Make sure the parts you are bonding are very clean and do the final wipe down with acetone. This stuff cures faster/better if it's heated up, so put a drop light on it over night to keep it warm.
Hysol and JB weld are epoxies. Hysol is stronger - takes much longer to setup. However, they will both break down in this application.
JB has metal dust in it and is pretty good for metal patches. Hysol for everything else.

The problem is differing thermal expansion/contraction with the metal and dissimilar epoxy Trek used.

If you're lazy and cheap, hysol might be ok to try. Why not.
But for the best fix, of course Trek's $125 is your best bet.

It probably won't be fixed for free. The $125 is standard for anybody, bent or broken hanger, loose hanger, etc. But the part about not even getting asked to show a receipt is pretty likely. Most of the time nobody asks.

Yikes. What year is your madone? Aside from it moving in/out, is there any visible evidence that's it is "unbonded"? Would a photo show anything? I took a look at mine (2006) and it seems solid. Let me (us) know how well Trek takes care of this, even though you're not the original owner. Thanks...and good luck!

Happened to my friend. His shop sent it in and they fixed him up. Replaced both dropouts.

sorry to say mine is also a '06. If your's was moving you would know it. Mine was fine one stroke of the pedal, then, POP! Then it wasnt fine. rear wheel wont stay centered and the popping / clunking is very evident. as soon as I hear somthin' I will let you all know. and if its bad news I may not need the interwebs.

This is why paper mache is a bad frame material.

He bought the bike used didn't he. Hey, aren't you the guy who pontificates bearing responsibility rather than blaming others? How did you say it to me? Have some balls and take responsibility for your actions.

Right, because Aluminum, Steel and Titanium are all perfect in every way.

Do you still fish with a steel fishing rod as well?
