How long did it take you...?
...to get back to 'form' after vacation/cold? I went on vacation for a week, where I only rode once for 2 hrs on a rental...came back, rode the next day and promptly got a cold. Im not gonna complain too much considering I hadnt been sick at all for over two years. Now, 8 days later the cold is pretty much gone, just a little leftover snot. But my fitness is way off. I tried to do my threshold interval this morning and failed miserably:mad:...I assume this is normal, Im just hoping it doesnt take too long to regain some of my previous form. I think my plan at this point is to just get out and put in some 'base' miles. What do you think? Whats been your experience?

Take a few easy rides before starting with the intervals. From my experience it takes twice as long as you are off.

I had a cross country track coach that used to say "1 day off of your planned training schedule, will take you two days to work back to where you were." No idea how accurate that actually is but it was always good motivation to keep training. Another thing he would say in regards to colds was "if it's above the neck your good to go, below the neck and you should take it easy."

A broken collar bone combined with school and now work have kept me off the bike the entire month of May. Six weeks later my fitness is almost completely gone, I feel like I'm just starting out again.
Hopefully because of the base I built this winter, it won't take too long to get back to a fitness level where i'm not embarrassed to ride in a group. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to regain form. |
You didn't ride because of a cold???

It depends.
I've had the flu with a fever and stuff coming out both ends and was back to 100% after a couple of days. Another time I had a sinus infection, really didn't feel all that bad, went on antibiotics and got my ass kicked on the bike for a month afterwards. |
