I bought a brand new road bike yesterday at my LBS. Put 60 miles on it and today, while taking it around the bike shop parking lot to check out a pedal creek I wiped out on the wet asphalt. Scratched the left shifter/brake pretty good and banged up my elbow and side a bit. The worst part is I chipped the hell out my front tooth. I would have preferred a broken arm to a chipped tooth. It was a new bike, and my chompers were great. Now I'm damaged goods. This sucks.

Ah that does suck, but the scratched parts on the shifter are pretty easily and inexpensively replaced if its any consolation.

Both my shifters are banged up from accidents in the first month I had my bike. After a while you get used to it as long as things function fine. At least you're ok, might wanna have the teeth checked out though.

I scratched the downtube on my new roadbike within the first 2 weeks from tripping while walking up some stairs. Don't know how the hell the downtube hit the concrete, but it pissed me off because it's a huge paint chip.

i broke off half my top front right tooth and a chip out of the left one 13 years ago. The dentist put a cap on them and they have lasted this long (warning the really damaged one took a root canal).

Don't quite remember what it cost as I was 15 or so- Sophomore year sucked. I'll find out for ya though.

It happened Labor day weekend and didn't get fixed until October something. I kept my mouth shut a lot during the first couple of months of school- quite out of character for me.

I fell on my face once as a kid (4th grade I think) - walking around with my hands in my pockets . Ever since then I always turn my head when I see the ground rushing up at me - it's kind of an instinct now.

I would think you would have the same natural reaction going forward so once you get that tooth fixed you should be good to go.

The cost depends on what sort of material you want for the crown and whether a root canal is required. I don't think I will need a root canal as i have no pain and I think the trauma is to the bottom of the tooth. That leaves the question of material. The hardest is metal/porcelain, but that does not look as good for front teeth because it is not translucent. The best for incisors is bonded porcelain. The pics I have seen on the internet (and the way it was described to me by the dentist) is that when done correctly one simply cannot no way/no how tell the difference between real teeth and bonded porcelain as long as the color is initially matched well. They even color correctly as they age. For best results, I am told that doing both front teeth is best (which is OK, as my other tooth is also cracked quite a bit)

My new bike was about $1000. I'm looking at anothr $1000 - $1300 for each new tooth. SUCKS!!!!

Scratches improve a bike. It's a piece of outdoor equipment that you use hard--it's not going to stay pristine. Wear the nicks as a badge of honor.
Sorry about the tooth, though. That DOES suck.

Years ago, before I left the UK, I had to go into hospital to have my wisdom teeth taken out (I had 5 and needed part of my jawbone cracked to get at one - I was in for 3 nights). When I came-to/was in a state to open my mouth properly I noticed the chip on my front tooth had gone. When I asked about it, the doctor who had performed the operation stated that he'd fixed it. He said that seeing as he was there and had all the tools to hand, the extra few minutes didn't make any difference

Total cost: 0 ... when the NHS works, boy does it work!

Sorry to hear about your accident.
Back in the day I had some work done at a local dentistry college. The cost was minimal and the service and work were fine. I broke a tooth eating popcorn. Man, that was not a good day!

I chipped my teeth on the side of a pool. The dentist bonded them at first (didn't work too well). Then went with porcelain veneers. They last about 10 years and need to be replaced due to wear and tear and discoloration. Not sure how much they are, but it's worth the cost.

Funny thing, I chipped three of my front teeth biking in 4th grade and my wife did two headers when she was younger requiring major dental work. Despite this, we met cycling a dozen years ago and remain avid cyclists today putting on a combined 5k miles a year (even after having a child).

You won’t even notice the chipped tooth after the dentist gets done, except your bank account. Still sucks, though.

Put it this way, your bike's been pre-crashed. The odds of you crashing it again are now slim to none, I mean what are the odds you'll crash twice.

I have a crown on one of my molars. White gold w/ porcelain.

It works pretty well..only complaint is how painful it was to get installed. The metal used to irritate my gums for the longest time...I also couldnt chew on it for a while. I did manage to chip part of the porcelain on mine when I had a nasty fall a few years back.

If you get one, avoid eating anyhting that may stick to it until you get used to it....fruit roll-ups and hard jelly candy is a no-no....might also want to consider slicing up apples before eating them and such until the cap feels comfortable to you...gum irritation sucks.

Well I just had a wreck in my week old 04 Buenos Aires! It sucks. I was forced off the road, but the problem was that the road had a curb on it. I landed on grass, still hurt though since I was going around 20mph or more. I was fine, just some road rash(or I guess you'd call it grass rash) but I could care less about my body. I'm young and can heal, but my poor Buenos Aires was not so fine. I put a scratch on the crank, and put a dint about the size of a dime in my right chain stay! I haven't seen any cracks in the frame, but is a dint going to cause a problem? I'm sick, I spend $2,000 bucks on a bike to get a good frame, now my frame is screwed up!

Youch! When you get a minute it'd be good to try and regroup. The crash was on wet pavement probably going slow. How come that happened? Was it the tires that can't handle wet pavement?

Crashes can be good if you can salvage and gain experience. Sorry about that tooth
