Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any recommendations? Standard routes for training?

Here's a list of shop ride out of Spokes, Etc. on Quaker Lane in Alexandria, VA. Let me know if you have difficulty seeing the routes.

You can always head down to Haines Point in D.C. for the hammer fests but I don't have details. What are you looking for and when?

You could always do the 7 am or 10 am Saturday group rides out of Rock Creek Park (https://dcvelo.com/rides.php) (the 10 am ride goes on Saturdays, despite what it says on this link). However, be attentive, when you get dropped on the 7 AM you are left by yourself on Clara Barton Parkway with dead legs and automobiles trying to kill you, and probably lost if you are not from the area.

you can usually pick up a fast training ride at haines point https://dc.about.com/od/restaurant1/a/EastPotomacPk.htm
https://thoos.com/guides/hains-point

Contes has a group ride https://contebikes.com/page.cfm?pageID=571 that leaves from their shop.

Let me know when your in the area, and I could probably get you hooked up with some routes or rides.

The Potomac Peddler's site should have some rides for that area. They have a Thursday night training ride out of Bellhaven Marina that isn't real long but makes up for it by going up every hill in the area.

I ride out of Alexandria and most of my rides are posted on garminconnect.com. Search for username "ge.herbert"

https://connect.garmin.com/explore#ac...&currentPage=1

I do TT workouts on Eisenhower Ave, N. Arlington Hills is a good ride, out to Mt. Vernon and back on either the GW Parkway or the Mt Vernon Trail with laps in Ft. Hunt Park along the way (off peak only). Also, one ride I posted was out of Falls Church, up through Potomac, Silver Spring, Rock Creek, but you can do the same ride out of Alexandria.

Are you moving here?

Team Lardbutt rides out of Fort Hunt Park at 7:00 am Sundays. The ride usually is around 50 miles at a 19-20 mph pace. There are lots of ways to cut off distance.
