Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campagnolo Athena

When did this come about?

https://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=L0046

and why? Don't they already have enough groupsets?

Its a blue collar workhorse group like Centar for those that want 11 speed but don't want to afford a full Record or Chorus group set. It gives pocket book friendly possiblities of mixing Athena with the upper level 11 speed groups.

PBK stocked it a little under a week ago. More expensive then Chorus 11 at ribble. I don't really get the niche, until they do a full alloy (levers/cranks) for cheaper.

pretty sure you can get it in a full alloy group with no carbon, so it's that option for 11 speed, while centaur offers the same in the new shape for 10 speed.

Come to think of it, I still have an old fondriest with some 8 speed athena groupset on it.

Right now it's carbon crank with carbon-wrapped alloy lever (lol-wut?). So I'm not really sure what the difference is from Chorus. I too have an old Italian bike with nigh-on useless, but damn pretty Athena monoplanars and gruppo.

I'm just going to get Chorus when I can afford the upgrade.

Fatallighting, As I understand it comes either a full alloy or the part carbon, same as centaur does.

PBK just happen to have the part carbon version for sale. The full alloy group looks pretty good.

Would look good on a master x lite or something similar.

Needs alloy levers to go with alloy crankarms. Hideous otherwise.

Is it any better than Centaur, which is much less expensive right now?

Seems like a lot of overlap in the product line...

That's why I had to ask myself why they'd get ride of the bottom two groupsets, and add two to the top of the line.

Xenon and Mirage were OE groups that were not selling. Why would they?

They were dropped and now the line has a choice of OE groups that are selling (like Centaur currently is) and aftermarket groups like Record and SR.

I don't get what Chorus is.

I run it with friction shifters and a 7-speed freewheel and it works fine. Index shifting aside, 1st gen Athena components are very attractive and function well, a real bargain for classics.

If they got ride of one of them, and pushed the other into the light a little, they could make some cash.
If they went with a simple good, better, best, better than best game plan, I tihnk it would work better for them. But what do I know?

that's like saying, "I don't get what 105 or Ultegra is".

With Athena, will there still be a Centaur?

Will Centaur be the bottom group now?

EDIT: I was wrong on the time.

As I remember, during the '90s it was the 3rd-rung, under (obviously) Record and Chorus.
It disappeared for a while, and now looks like they've dusted off the logo for a new 11sp groupset.

I don't like the way Campy is diluting the brand by introducing lower-end groups and components! Reminds me of Kramer and Charvel guitars in the 80's, farming out the name to junk made in Japan and Korea.

That said, I'm debating between Record 11 and Chorus 11 when I finally upgrade from 8-speed. Seems the brifters are THE SAME and aside from weight differences (and some asthetics), Chorus 11 is 32% cheaper than Record 11 (thanks to the nice write ups on Competitive Cyclist's website).

It was out by 1989. https://velobase.com/ViewSingleCompon...9-03847b68d23f

The Campy timeline just says it was in the 1991 catalog, not that it was introdced in 1991.

I had it on my bike in 1989. No one, including the Campy rep, could get it to shift properly. The LBS graciously took it back. Even though Campy refused to do so. Those were dark days for Campy.

Campy's first attempts at indexed shifting were pretty poor. The pros kept their C-Record and just friction shifted.
