Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Witches of Chipnsealwick

They're baaaackkk.... today, in the pouring rain, on my favorite little hill combo, the road looks all freshly paved from 200 meters away, then I get on it and F me. It's chip/seal. Fresh chip/seal. God help us all.

What do you say we find the friggin witches who invented chip/seal and burn them. Who's with me?

But I don't like the smell of burning human flesh. Can we go with ammonia? Well, as long as we dont drink it.

Wait, you actually have to be a Gomer to know what chipseal is in the first place. Perhaps you are too sophisticated and urban to know this.

Never mind.

I just read the WP stub on it. Never seen the stuff, and I grew up in CT farm country. Sounds nasty.

Spray wet tar on road surface, lay chopped rock over top, roll and compress.

From Wiki:

"Although chip seal is an effective low cost way to repair road, it has some drawbacks. Loose crushed stone is often left on the surface, due to under-application of emulsion or over application of stone. If not removed, this can cause safety and environmental problems such as cracked windshields, loss-of-control crashes (especially for motorcyclists and bicyclists), and deposition of foreign material into drainage courses. Therefore, it is very important to sweep the road after the emulsion sets."

So Pcad, get your broom out and get busy sweeping. Or GYBOAGBS.

I'll bring the matches. Last year, they chipsealed the horrible climb (what was that road called? I've blocked it from my memory.) on the Tour of the Hilltowns the week before the race. Nothing like a 12% grade and loose gravel. Unless it's a 12% grade and loose gravel at a race pace.

It's East Hawley Road (you're welcome), and at least you were going UP hill. I had a nice crash-out descending a chipsealed road in the rain last spring. That was fun. Caused by another rider, though.

The chipseal is far worse in the first couple of days, after that it settles in, and typically the town sweeps up the residue within two weeks or so. It is also far worse in towns where they use a larger diameter stone. Warwick, NY uses a max 3/16" gravel diameter, surrounding towns use 1/8" (smaller) stones. Warwick roads are a utter complete friggin horror show in comparison on a freshly treated road. I hit one on my motorcycle last year and almost went down. It was nearly unrideable. The larger stones also result in crappy road surface after they're done. The back roads in Warwick are like the Flintstones, they really, really suck. That's why I don't train in Warwick much anymore, particularly on the back roads.

They don't use chipseal on the main roads here.

I was on a 10-12% grade with fresh chipseal today. Going uphill it's not so bad.

Going downhill it's a friggin Suicide Slide.
