Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Broken Callor bone and Scalpula

Just got back from the hospital. I was riding at night with all my very good lights and did not see the huge drop off on the edge of the road. Happen about 9:45 and I immediately had two people to stop for me, one guy said he had a mountain bike and new where the shop I work at is at. Hurt like a huge SOB.

Ouch. Any indication on how bad the break is? Surgery?

No they gave me a doctor to go to. They didn't say they thought it needed surgery.

Hang in there ... you already know it hurts like a mofo. Did mine about a year ago and it's pretty near 100% now.

Hope you feel better. I'm also recovering from a broken clavicle, partially torn ligament. The first 2 weeks, in particular, sucked. It's been a month now for me.

All those winter base miles gone down the tubes...

But the more important question is, did your baby survive?

I have broken both of mine, but neither needed surgery. Both were "green stick" fractures where the bone splintered. Strange I doubt that would happen now that I am in my 40's. My most vivid memory of the second break on my mountain bike was hearing the crunch and knowing it was breaking by the sound.

They were considering re-breaking it because the alignment was so off, but I fixed that for them. I moved during the night and is snapped back into place. I think the whole neighborhood heard me yell.

Sorry, don't mean to bum you out. They both healed fine. Best of luck with your recovery.

Hmm something tells me we need to put off night riding or at least take it at a casual speed.

I fractured my clavicle and partially tore a ligament about 1 1/2 months ago. Was riding at night with some friends. Sprinting down an empty downtown around ~30 mph street I hit a pothole I wasn't able to see. Forced my wheel to the left and I flipped. Lots of road rash. Ended up with a fractured clavicle (no surgery thankfully), a piece of splintered bone left over that is supposedly ok to be left alone since I was told there was a thick membrane in the same area that will prevent it from spiking blood vessels.

Fast forward 1 1/2 months. Road rash is all gone, some nasty left over scars, Still a tiny bit sore and mobility isn't 100% but I'm healthy enough to bike around (not at full speed of course) without aggravating my injury. First few weeks are always the worst.

Good luck on the recovery. Ice and more ice and take the physical therapy your Orthopedic doctor recommends

Sorry to hear that Cody! I had two team mates, in consecutive days, break their collarbones at the Tour de Tuscaloosa this year. One in the crit and the other in the road race. One required surgery but the other didn't. They are both back on the bike now. Good luck with the recovery!

My bars and stem are twisted around on my Ritchey full carbon fork. Thats the only thing worth mentioning. My STI's are scratch and some new bar tape.

My steerer tube could cause this to happen.

I broke both when I got hit by a car. The combination of that and my traumatic head injury led me to leave the sport of bike racing forever. I was off the bike for 6 months. It led to depression and alcoholism.

Have fun.

What was the reason for the dropoff? Maybe a hole left by someone else? If so, you might have a case/////
