Rain stats from NY for June

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rain stats from NY for June

How rainy has it been in NY this month?

The ugly stats:

8.35" of rain so far in Central Park for June through today (6.22.09)
Normal for June to this date: 2.79"

6th wettest June on record. 22 days, 17 with measurable precipitation in NY City.

But it has not rained yet today. It's supposed to essentially clear out by tomorrow. More spotty rain in the forecast through Friday here and there, then it looks like it might settle into the typical sunny and hot July pattern after that. Let's hope so.

Pssst. Someone say something about road cycling, or it's off to foo. Which would be a terrible shame.

Rain in NY has negatively impacted my road miles.

I'll ride in just about any weather, but I've definitely had enough rain in NY this Spring. It was fine for awhile, but now I'm really sick of riding in wet shorts/shoes only to come home and have to clean a filthy bike that has bits of CP horse manure and NYC street trash stuck to it.

I hope the vegetation is enjoying this.

If you don't understand how 17/22 days of rain impacts road cycling, you should lose your Moderator Stripes.

I don't really mind riding in the rain the few times I've been hit with it. It's all the crap that comes along because of it that bothers the hell out of me. Limited visibility, braking, and traction; and that's just the drivers I have to share the road with.

+1 on all that...BUT the cleanup also sucks! I hate cleaning my bike after riding in the rain, not to mention the soaking shoes and clothing. All together it blows.

The only bad thing about riding in all this rain are the frequent punctures and the amazing drivetrain gunk that necessitates 30 minute drivetrain cleaning sessions, which is a very messy job that you have to now do every 10-15 days or so. It's rough on your road bikes. I really don't mind riding in the rain.

Racing in the rain? F that. I won't even do group rides in the rain anymore. It just sucks too hard.

Today was one of the first days I almost made it without getting wet. But, alas, I got rained on commuting home from work at about 6:20pm on the west side MUP which continues the streak of all last week.

Yesterday, the sun came out, and I was like, damn, I gotta hit the road. Crossed the GWB, looked north, saw a sheet of rain coming my way. I got wet, again.

I don't mind riding in the rain as long as it's not cold. But, I usually take the beater fixed gear with a rear fender.

The Bad: clean bikes once a week, flats, cold sometimes
The Good: mastered the balance between steering with the bars and the lean, no need to put on sunscreen, don't care if it's raining anymore - just go

+1. Much easier in summer. I ride in the rain in the winter too, unless it's really hammering rain.

I've actually gotten used to seeing gray skies every morning so the psychological impact has been negligable the past week or so. I don't mind partaking the the rain whinge-fest though:

1) Riding slower on descents sucks
2) Soggy shoes suck
3) Poor visibility in high traffic areas sucks
4) Slippery roads suck

Yup, Seattle just had 20-something days with no rain, it was almost a record. Winter is still on the way though... eventually.

Probably what I'm going to be shopping for next once the debit card cools off. I figure once I get them the rain will stop, just the way my luck always works.
