Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this for real********************?

I've seen a person on e-bay offering Dawes road bikes for a ridiculous price. I know you get what you pay for, but I also know mark-up, profit, and overhead.

For around $240.00 this guy is going to send you a "bike shop" quality bike.

What's up with that? Any experiences?

Thanks,

Mike

Only a shill would put that many questions marks on the end of a sentence.

Search the forum for bikesdirect shill and you may see the ways in which your thread falls into the pattern...

I have a dawes lightning dlx (not sure of the year?) that I was given from a friend. It's a steel bike set up with sora components that I use as my everyday beater/commuter bike but man are those welds horrendous. The welds are not consistent so I would not want this as my bike that I'm going to train on or race on, but riding a mile and a half to class everyday is no big deal to me. All this is not to say that it doesn't hold up to a beating, just my experience.

Wow, sensitive. I was only asking. Like I said, it falls in the pattern. You can thank the shills for making it subject-non-grata here.

pkpsu,

Thanks for the reply. I kind of figured poor quality would be the case.

What I dont get is - how come anyone who posts about BD or is otherwise accused of shilling never knows the meaning of the word?

BD actually pays people to post for them, so it meets the actual definition of the word.

shill  /ʃɪl/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [shil] Show IPA Slang.
–noun 1. a person who poses as a customer in order to decoy others into participating, as at a gambling house, auction, confidence game, etc.
2. a person who publicizes or praises something or someone for reasons of self-interest, personal profit, or friendship or loyalty.

Anyway, like I said, it fit the BD-shill-pattern...

To specifically address the $240ish Dawes bikes, they come with bottom of the barrel components (stem shifters, for instance). I have a couple of bikes from Bikes Direct but I would pass on the absolute bottom line ones for the next rung up, which at least come with STI shifters for around $350.

I had a MIG welded steel BD frame that had ugly but functional welds, and my wife has an aluminum one with very nice TIG welds. Most of their current frames are TIG welded and IMO have good weld quality.

Yeah, I gathered that - my point was that the word "shill" is a fairly common word, but it seems that virtually everyone who is accused of shilling seems to not know what it means. Kinda like "I dont know what it means, therefore I am not one."

Incidentally, my first post on BF was asking about a BikesDirect bike, come to think of it - and maybe there is a Divine Entity that looks after the innocent, cos I actually got some helpful advice, wasnt told to HTFU or called a shill, and ended up with a Trek 1.2, which I believe is the very same bike Lance rides on the TdF (although that hasnt helped make me fast).

Shill
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A shill is an associate of a person selling goods or services or a political group, who pretends no association to the seller/group and assumes the air of an enthusiastic customer. The intention of the shill is, using crowd psychology, to encourage others unaware of the set-up to purchase said goods or services or support the political group's ideological claims. Shills are often employed by confidence artists. The term plant is also used. Shill bidding, found on many auction sites such as eBay, is punishable by law[1] and may result in fines and or prosecution.

Shilling is illegal in many circumstances and in many jurisdictions because of the frequently fraudulent and damaging character of their actions. However, if a shill does not place uninformed parties at a risk of loss, but merely generates "buzz", the shill's actions may be legal. For example, a person planted in an audience to laugh and applaud when desired (see claque), or to participate in on-stage activities as a "random member of the audience", is a type of legal shill.

"Shill" can also be used pejoratively to describe a critic who appears either all-too-eager to heap glowing praise upon mediocre offerings, or who acts as an apologist for glaring flaws. In this sense, they would be an implicit "shill" for the industry at large, possibly because their income is tied to its prosperity.
