Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally gave up on my Toupe saddles....

Rode it for a year and thought I liked it butt, alas it was too hard.

It was a gel toupe.

Threw on a Serfas Acuna for a try out.

As we used to say in the car business: there's an ass for every seat.

And vice versa.

I have a Toupe Gel, I prefer the racing Toupe, both 143mm. 5 Toupe saddles on 5 bicycles.

Interesting. I just bought a Team Edition 143.

I like the 130 that came on a bike, but it was too narrow, and the inside of my sitbones sat on it, instead of the bottom of the sitbones. I'm thinking the 143 will be perfect.

I just got the Toupe Gel 143 and did a century on it yesterday. Nice saddle but I kept thinking I'd like more padding. Does the non gel have more padding / is it softer? The gel is really nice but I still want one that is a bit softer.

I tried the Alias and Avatar and didn't like them. Edges dug into my sit bones...

Anyone try the MTB Phenom saddles? I wonder if they are more comfy? I don't care if it weighs a bit more.

^^^ I would have to go the opposite way saying the toupe gel is golden while the toupe only worked for me on shorter rides. As Pcad said "there's an ass for every seat"

Phenom is very similar shape, but a few design differences to make it more MTB friendly. It also has a tad bit more padding and is cheaper for the base model.

I loved my Toupe but discovered it was causing me....issues...when riding on a trainer. It's still one of my faves on the road, but I have pretty much switched over to the Alias on all of my rigs. Butter.

The Alias has sharper edges that dig into my sit bones, unless I kept myself crammed as far back as possible. Perhaps a wider Alias would have worked, I tried the 143.

I think I'll have to give the Toupe non gel a spin and I'm going to look at the Phenom MTB saddles too, there might be one that is soft and cushy and doesn't weigh 2lbs. By all means the Toupe gel does not suck. If my tender hind quarters can tolerate it for 100 miles, as a brand new saddle to me and my sit bones, then it is not bad at all.

+1 I have use the Phenom on my road bike and tandem for over a year and like it. I'm 6'-4", 192 lbs and was afraid that I'd break the Toupe.

Finally taking the Toupe off my Tarmac was like finally taking the swizzle stick out of my martini.

When you buy a new Tarmac, does the LBS dude measure your ass to see what width saddle is required, or do they just send out Tarmacs with some standard sized Toupe?

I did a century on the Toupe Gel last weekend. My bum felt as good at the finish as it did before the start.

You might want to try the Alias. I'm on a Toupe now, but have ridden the Alias for years. The Alias is a much softer ride.

Keep in mind that a minimalistic saddle like the Toupe is not made to last forever. They need to be replaced occasionally. I find 10,000 miles is about where my Toupe's start to give up there comfort.

loved mine (std 143) up until 2-3hrs on the saddle - then ouch!!

now on Prologo scratch and have not looked back, it really is wonderful!!

I would almost go as far as saying it's the best money I have spent on my new EPS Colnago.

I was trying the toupe on my mtn bike and the front peice of the saddle jammed into the back of my nuts

and it felt like if I hit it harder it could have potentially cut off my balls!

I do not recommend running it, that's why I asked.
