Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Easy Brake Cables Q

Hey guys, so I just fixed up an old Schwinn World that I found and I have a quick question about it: I forgot to put a metal cap on the end of the brake cable that enters the lever housing, and I've already taped up the bars. Will this be an issue? So far the brakes work, but I just want to ease my conscious or fix the problem. Thanks!

I don't think I've ever used a ferrule in the shifter, and I haven't had any problems.

YMMV

As long as the end of the housing was cut square and cleaned up so there is no plastic stuff hanging over the end it will be good. If the end wasn't cleaned up well, you may get a little mushiness to the braking, but it will still function. A lot of levers won't accept a ferrule there.
