Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmut Quality

Is it worth it to spend $80-$90 rather than $40-$50 on a helmet?

Just don't use a "Helmut" = more air flow.

Higher cost does not always mean better protection apparently.

Just get the one that fits on your head and has the most holes your willing to pay for.

This is pretty much it. Helmets must meet federal guidelines for impact protection to be sold, so the really expensive ones aren't necessarily better. Where they are better is, as AEO noted, that the expensive ones give you equal protection with bigger vents. Also, there may be aesthetic value in the more expensive ones as well.

Actually, I suspect the more vented helmets offer less protection. The test requirements are looking for minimum compliance; there is no rating for protection above the minimum. That said, I wouldn't be overly worried about using a highly vented helmet. If value is a prime driver the Bell Achera is the best value in a decently vented helmet in my opinion.

+1 It cost more to engineer and manufacture a helmut with more vents. Then they add some more $ for the cool factor.

my giro helmet has a "carbon skeleton". which apparently helps keep the helmet together during an impact.

All the newb wanted was a f,n helmut.
I for one am quite proud that he wished to consult the great intellect of the road forum before such a purchase."DO" feels we really got it going on in here.

If you get a cheaper one and sweat is dripping onto your shades, impaired visibility could be dangerous. Might justify a mega-holey Giro. Or a cheap headband. Otherwise any Bell is fine. The company could not make less-safe helmets in its budget line, as it would be a massive invitation to product-liability lawsuits.

Giro is owned by Bell, not likely the subsidiary is holding back secrets on better head-protection discoveries to prevent the parent from using Giro scientist and engineers' innovations on the parent brand helmets, again think of the liability.

I wonder if MTB helmets are more robust than road ones. Anyone?

I went with the Bell Furio. College Student on a semi-tight budget. Didn't want anything upwards of $100.

I like it, though a lot of people say the Bell Alchera is better.
