Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mysterious Cannondale!

I purchased this enigmatic Cannondale 'Factory Pilot' from my LBS. I can't find any information about it on the internet but it has the Shimano 105 group on it. Most likely mid eighties with indexed shifting. The bike shop owner said there might have only been a handful made. Does anybody have any ideas as to how much this bike is worth or any other relevant information? Thank you.

Here is a photo:

Can't be Mid-80's. Based on the rear dropouts, it's a series 3 frame. They were made from 88-94.
Do my eyes deceive me or do I see a biopace sticker on teh large chainring? That would be another clue that would point early 90's.

The frame does have a series 3 label on it. There is also a biopace chainring. I paid $300 for it.

ummmmmmm....someone probably just put some Oakley sunglass stickers on it, would be my guess...factory pilot was the original eye shades they made. I doubt it was some special edition, but it is possible.

The font is the same as this Oakley sticker someone put on this helmet.

These are the Factory Pilot Eye Shades.

I'm going to guess its from somewhere around 1989-1990, give or take a year.

You may want to look at www.vintagecannondale.com for more info.

It's nothing more than a 3.0 series with some Oakley stickers on it. Special, it is not...

Looks like a steel fork. I would have expected aluminum for that frame. Possibly a replacement fork.

No, it originally came with a steel fork. One of my teammates had this frame in slick late-80s teal, and it came with a factory steel fork.

Looks allot like the 91 SR400 I had. I added a set of 7 speed brifters, a carbon fork and flipped it to a freind for her neice. BTW the original fork is aluminum.

Mine from 1988 or so has an aluminum fork ... Not sure of the years and when all the little changes occurred. You can find the old catalogs on line.

*lightbulb moment*

The "Factory Pilot" name and logo is related to Oakley, not Cannondale. They were Oakley's first goggle-like model of sunglasses, brought out after their O-Frame goggles. The name's been attached to a lot of their other products.

Anyway, it looks like a former race bike or team model. Was Union Oil (the "76" sticker) a sponsor of a Cannondale team?

It's ridiculous. So $300 is good for a Cannondale (IMHO).

I'll be the nit-picker to say these frames pre-date the CAAD series. Not arguing the bone jarring bit.

Cool bike. I like how it looks and it's neat that it has some history to it. Ride it and enjoy it!

My friend has a frame with those dropouts. They're ugly. I hate them. They're like an afterthought.

Does anyone know the reason behind them?
