Stinky Bar Tape

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stinky Bar Tape

One of the outcomes of the northeastern monsoon we've been experiencing this June (precip up 50% over the norm) is that my fizik bar tape has gotten soaking wet so often that now it has that dank "locker room" smell - and you don't have to get very close to detect it.

Any suggestions on how to deodorize it (once the rain stops)?

New tape.

Nothing feels good like new tape. Also think of how many hours of sweat your tape has gone through. The bar tape has to be the most unsanitary part of the bike

Thought of that, but I was wondering if I could avoid the chore of wrapping new tape (is there anything more tedious?) if it is otherwise physically in good shape.

I'd say the saddle might be less sanitary...

You've got some sort of bacteria growing in there. A couple of things might help and avoid the chore of new tape. Try Lysol spray and leaving it in hot sunlight. Other anti bacterial agents may work, but be careful if you use one that contains chlorine because your bar tape will change color.

If you live in a hot humid or wet climate where your bars take a regular good soaking from rain or sweat, changing your bar tape at least once a year is a good idea as it lets you see if there's corrosion or other nastiness starting under there. for example, you'd be amazed at the amount of salt build up you might find.
