Just back to cycling .... How bad do I suck

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just back to cycling .... How bad do I suck

Well let me start with a little background. I am 43 years old and 6' tall. I use to ride ALOT back in early 90's when I lived in San Diego. I have always been very athletic and stay active in many ways over the years. (Sports, weight lifting, running, biking, Kick boxing, jiu jitsu, wrestling etc..) After not being too active over the past few years I stepped on the scale in Jan 09 and weighed 259 lbs. I have always been big (so to speak) broad shoulders, chest etc.. Believe me It was no big surprise I knew I was getting big aka FAT.

Well, I decided to change things a bit and get back in shape. I have changed my diet and started to run....a lot. I currently run about 22 miles a week. With at least a long run (8 miles plus) every other week. Longest run to date is 15miles. In July I start my training for the Philadelphia distance run (half marathon in Sept) and Philly Marathon in November. I am currently down to 219.

Well, I bought a used Orbea Orca with full campy record for a great deal and have decided that after the marathon, biking will be the number one activity and running will be supplemental. 2 reasons 1. I Love Riding 2. I really don't like running.

Today I decided to go for a Bike/run combo and boy did it kick my butt. I did 28 miles on the course in the attachment (Not sure if I attached it properly). Each gradient is 100ft. The climbing is kicking the $%#@ out of me. BUT I LOVE IT! After the bike I ran four miles with 1 mile of it up hill.

The bike ride took me 1:49 min and I only avg 15.3mph according to my Blackburn neuro.

So how bad do I suck at cycling and can I drastically improve. I have bought Friels book and plan on developing some training plans for the fall/winter. I will continue to use cycling as a cross training exercise until after the 26.2.

Give it to me folks - I can use any advice.... And hopefully I can handle the criticism

Best thing you can do for now is just get riding to develop different muscles, develop form etc - then approach a more deliberate training regimen. Although you've been doing quite a bit of running, I'm guessing you'll need to get a few months riding in to get used to it again.

Will definitely need to build those base miles. Just hoping that It does come back. Really need to work on that pedal stroke. I will also look into getting involved with a local club.
