Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some studies show caffeine delays lactic acid build up. That would be a benefit.

incorrect. A recent study had the exact opposite conclusion about acclimation and tolerance.

Furthermore, the potentiation of force during submaximal electrical stimulation is identical in habitual and nonhabitual caffeine consumers.
Do you have evidence to support your statement or are you just guessing?

I doubt one cup of coffee per day will do much harm to most, but for me even one cup sets me off, increases my heart beat, raises my BP and makes my hands shakes while performing certain eye/hand tasks. My Doc says caffiene/coffee is more like a drug than a food and will have different affects on different people and Im one of the ones who should stay away from it. I have tried decaf and expresso which have less affect on me but about 6 months ago I decided to stay away from not only all coffees but anything with caffiene in it.. I now sleep much better so I dont need a stimulant to get me going in the morning.

The effects are only good for about 4-6 hours so I don't drink any after 3pm and sleep like a baby.

oh yeah didn't they make that lifetime movie about him? Bumped up in a bathroom stall and straight fell out dead. But wasn't there a previously undiagnosed heart condition in the mix?

per your link, "The ergogenic effect of caffeine on endurance exercise performance is multifactorial"

I was referring to the fact that caffeine has been used to increase fat metabolism at submaximal efforts (a supposed metabolic effect of caffeine, although this has been argued for a while; as in here (con) and here (pro)). I was taught at some point (recently, though I agree our knowledge changes quite rapidly) that the metabolic effects of caffeine were greater in those who were not habitual users. The first link cites other effects of caffeine on hormonal balance and metabolism. Wasn't referring to neuromuscular effects, something I have little knowledge of. I do think that I'll keep ingesting coffee the old-fashioned way, though. Not much into the intercranial injections.

Why do we all have to get all science-y? Caffeine is great. I don't question why.
Just like I don't know how pr0n images are made of 1s and 0s.

my thoughts. caffeine for althetic performance minimal. caffeine for weight lost, minimal. caffeine for giving you energy, none, it only makes you feel energized, it doesn't have any caliores which is the energy our body uses.

i drink tea or coffee every day. its an intoxicant which means may help in getting rid of free radicals, which can cause cancer which may do nothing to your body. tea has phytochemical which i believe are benfical if consumed all day long over the course of an entire life time. caffine also helps my headaches, but can cause headaches as well.

I always have coffee before a morning ride. I ride much better when conscious.

Lately, I've been going on first-thing in the morning, crack-of-dawn rides, for which I prepare a small flask of espresso the night before. My more-than-half asleep brain can pull on some clothes and stumble out the door, so I'm about a mile down the road by the time I wake up enough to consider bailing out because it's too damn early.
